Glass or Acrylic replacement on SuperSun 2

Ok, I check on the garden one day to find the glass from my SuperSun2 hood w/ 600 HPS shattered and on the floor next to the ladies. :badday:

I have no idea what might have caused this!? :fsu:The ladies fortunately are fine with no damage and I consider this extremely lucky. The glass was tempered and I am looking for a replacement.

Any suggestions? I am thinking a few options may work but trying to decide if acrylic, plexiglass, lexan, regular or tempered glass is the best fit. I'd also prefer to pick it up locally at the Home de pot / Lowes. Is one material better than another for light transmission? I've heard plexi glass can warp over time...

Also what thickness would be advised? The replacement is for a SuperSun2 which is the version before the sealed-hinged type.

i'd be worried about the acrylics ability to handle the heat, and would expect some light loss due to plexi glass. heard good things about lexan, dont remember what exactly though. i'd go with tempered glass just to be safe. but i also have a thing against plastic-like materials.

I'm looking at a Brand New SS2 and I can't see how the glass might just shatter on its own ... Was the trap door sprung? Could some liquid have contacted the glass? Are you air cooling the hood?

WH - The trap door isn't there since it is the 3 year old version. The new one has the hinge/seal but the other has a metal bracket that is held in place with 2 screws once the glass is slid inside the metal rails. The hood wasn't air cooled but I can't imagine temps being the issue, especially with glass. It was 12" above the canopy and I'm running soil so liquid contacting the glass doesn't seem likely either. Maybe I'm just lucky?!

Are you sure you have a SS2? This is the Super Sun 600 ... Notice the flanges venting the sides. It has a Trim Piece that holds the glass in. The SS2 is vented Inline ...

How about just leaving the glass off? Keep a fan blowing on it, even if it's a cheap oscillating type, and it'll stay cool enough.

I say this because I've been told there's lumens lost with all types of glass. I'm even thinking of removing the glass from my reflector which is also a Super Sun 2. Also, the SS2 does have a hinge and holes on both sides for inline ventilation.

Don't use the lexan plexi- it is designed to block out UV rays. I tried lexan, regular plexiglass, regular window glass, and tempered glass in my cabinet. The lexan came in the worst, plexiglass was third, then tempered glass/ window glass.
