Giuliani: loving your pet is a sickness

The following exchange occurred on Mayor Rudolph Giuliani's weekly radio show on WABC-AM on July 23. The caller was David Guthartz, a ferrets' rights activist who was upset by a June 29 directive by the city's Board of Health making it illegal to keep ferrets and a range of other animals as pets.

Mayor Giuliani: We're gonna go to David in Oceanside.

David Guthartz: Hello, Mr. Giuliani, we speak again.

Giuliani: Hi, David.

Guthartz: Let me introduce myself again, David Guthartz, executive president of New York Ferrets' Rights Advocacy. Last week when we spoke, you said a very disparaging remark to me, that I should get a life. That was very unprofessional of you. Here we're trying to get something seriously done–

Giuliani: I, I–

Guthartz: Without you talking over me, we're trying to get something very seriously done–

Giuliani: David, you're on my show. I have the right to talk over you.

Guthartz: But here's the thing: We're trying to get an important issue taken care of where the city is violating state law and I asked you last week if you care about the law.

Giuliani: Yes, I do care about the law. I think you have totally and absolutely misinterpreted the law, because there's something deranged about you.

Guthartz: No, there isn't, sir.

Giuliani: The excessive concern that you have for ferrets is something you should examine with a therapist. Not with me.

Guthartz: Don't go insulting me again!

Giuliani: I'm not insulting you. I'm being honest with you. Maybe no one in your life has ever been honest with you.

Guthartz: I happen to be more sane than you.

Giuliani: This conversation is over, David. Thank you. [Mr. Giuliani cuts him off.] There is something really, really, very sad about you. You need help. You need somebody to help you. I know you feel insulted by that, but I'm being honest with you. This excessive concern with little weasels is a sickness.

I'm sorry. That's my opinion. You don't have to accept it. There are probably very few people who would be as honest with you about that. But you should go consult a psychologist or a psychiatrist, and have him help you with this excessive concern, how you are devoting your life to weasels.

There are people in this city and in this world that need a lot of help. Something has gone wrong with you. Your compulsion about it, your excessive concern with it, is a sign of something wrong in your personality. I do not mean to be insulting. I'm trying to be honest with you and I'm trying to give you advice for your own good. I know you, I know how you operate, I know how many times you called here this week. Three or 4 o'clock in the morning, David, you called here.

You have a sickness. I know it's hard for you to accept that, because you hang on to this sickness, and it's your shield, it's your whatever. You know, you gotta go to someone who understands this a lot better than I do. And I know you're real angry at me, you're gonna attack me, but actually you're angry at yourself and you're afraid of what I'm raising with you. And if you don't deal with it, I don't know what you're gonna do. But you called here excessively all week, and you called here at 3 o'clock in the morning. And 4 o'clock in the morning. Over weasels. Over a ferret.

So I know this is difficult and tomorrow one of the newspapers will write how mean I am and how cruel I am and all this other stuff, but I believe, because my father and mother taught me this, that you should be honest with people. And I am giving you the benefit of 55 years of experience having represented hundreds and in some cases thousands of people on either side in the courtroom, having handled insanity defenses and cases.

You need help! And please get it! And you don't have the right to call here at three o'clock in the morning, harass the people on my staff, because of your compulsion. So, David, see what you can do to get help. But we can't help you. We don't have the professional expertise to help you. Now we're gonna move on to Richard in the Bronx.

(maybe they wanted to outlaw ferrets as they are an effective means of masking the aroma of the dankest of crops)

I've been concerned with this little weasel for quite a while now. Am I sick?

Ferets mean little to nothing to me, but I would never say that they should mean the same to anyone else.

I have to deal with assholes trying to ban my pets from my town. I have done nothing wrong, neither have my pets.

I don't see the basis for such a thing.

To me it's not about the ferets rights, its about your right to have a feret if that is what you want.

Rosy - I hear ya there...lol.

Damn, would you look at those beady eyes. And to think that a weasel like him kept two pet snakes named Rummy and Dick.

<sarcasm> Gee, I really needed to read this article to realize Rudy was a dolt. </sarcasm>

Mustela (Ferrets) are the 3rd largest group of pets in the US. Whatever is said regarding them can also be said for any other pet. Dog and cat owners are typically more insane, in my humble opinion. :joint:

District of Columbia, Hawaii, and Cali are the only current "ferret free" zones in the states.

The concern is if released into the wild ferrets will dominate and destroy the native species of smaller animals in the locale. (I know you all would miss rats larger than your housecats.. or maybe just Giuliani)

This happend in NZ hundreds of years ago when Polecats were brought into the land to take care of rabbit problems. Well they did, and then the rare flightless birds, and the rodents, reptiles, and anything else stuck on the ground. It became a major problem and they are no longer allowed in the country.

They have been domesticated a long time now however and this scenario is highly unlikely. Polecats (and ferts, a long time ago) were trained to hunt. Ferrets are trained to poop in a box.

There still exist people who practice Ferreting using them to drive Rabbits and Fox out of their holes/dens. EUR.

I can tell you first hand if mine were to get out they would be dead. Ferrets wouldn't know what to do with a rat even if it were rotisserie style with hair on the side.

Overseas ferrets are still brought up on Whole Prey diets, so I can see there being a concern....

Highly Offended...

Highly Offended...

That article almost brought me to tears

Just like there are "Crazy Cat Ladies"

Crazy_Cat_Lady.jpg

there are Ferret People who hoard or what have you, but that is just a very VERY small percentage.

They are the 3rd most popular pet in the US, behind dogs and cats...

Why have a pet if your not going to love it and make it a part of your life?

i also took offense to him repeatedly calling them "weasels" that is a term of endearment ferret lovers use, not meant like an insult. i could use an example of groups of people who do this kinda, but i wont go there ;)

What a lack of judgement and thought.

Ignorant is a good word for it...

Heil Rudy!

he can't possibly win, he's too pro choice for the republicans, and that mostly would help him with women, but i can't see a woman voting for someone who informed his wife that he was cheating on her and wanted a divorce with a press conference, then tried to move his mistress into the taxpayer owned mayors mansion before his wife and kids were even ready to move out.

Why does this assbag rudy exist? If people want change in america rudy will not bring any change other than continue to take away our rights even further. Sometimes I fear another terrorist attack not because of death of the innocent but what our government will do to us in response. Imagine the patriot act X 10 especially if we put another retard like rudy in office.

Mussolini made the trains run on time, Rudy got rid of intersection car washes ... W, um, thinking, thinking.

I've wondered for a long time why NYC elects Republican mayors. Is it that the Upper East-siders vote in droves, that the Dems destroy each other in primaries?

I love this forum, I get on here to read about herb, and I learn that the nation is overrun by goofy ass domesticated rodents. I'm taking the Jules position on this one, these better be some charming f*cking hamsters.

I don't want to watch Rudy's dentures clacking through an inauguration speech either, but yeah, the inanity of crusading for ferrets on talk-radio in the wee-hours? This might be an issue we agree on.

people pay good money for their pets, and become attached to them. it is human nature to have pets. some people like dogs, some horses, some cats, some gerbils, some rats, some bats, some fish, some lizzards...you get the idea. I doubt there are more people with ferrets than there are dogs and cats. but the principle is still the same. a pet is a pet, people shouldn't be completely limited on what pets they should have, especially on the basis that some people in power don't like them. I doubt the ferret pet population is causing a problem.

the thing that concerns me the most is not the ferret ban, but the way rudy handled it...he stated the guy had a sickness, just cause he didn't agree with him, he insulted him and tried to say it was a diagnosis, when he admitted himself that is not his area of expertise. I fear that in the future, rudy may say people are sick just because they don't agree with this or that. don't agree with me taking away rights? you must be sick, you need help that only being locked away in a mental institution can give you.

I fear if he became president in the future, there would be serious problems. his mentality is off. he says the guy is insane for supporting ferrets as pets, well I say he can be called equally insane or more for opposing them as pets, especially since this has to be more of a personal concern for rudy to uphold it so readily. so I say rudy is obsessed with keeping them banned from being pets. then rudy cuts him off to get the last word in, as if that makes him right and the other guy wrong...another example of him wanting you to hear only what you want to hear. and people in the office at 4am? sounds kind of far fetched.

I bet the guy only called that late once, and what does the time he calls matter? maybe he works all day long, maybe he works nights and sleeps all day and called him on his break. you see, rudy didn't speak about the topic at hand, because he didn't have a good argument, so he did the next best thing he could do....and that is to try and discredit the guy by insulting him and claiming he is insane. rudy somehow thinks that if he says this guy is crazy, that it makes it true, and so his arguments must be void because of that. that is more the mindset of desperation. I bet if it was dogs or cats, you would see masses of people opposing him, but like I said, there cant be a huge base of ferret owners compared to dogs and cats, so it will be harder to fight. There may be plenty opposing him, but the media isn't covering it because rudy doesnt want them to.

besides, who is a ferret harming when it is pretty much locked up in your home all the time? What are these ferret owners supposed to do? get rid of their pets they payed good money for and took care of? thousands of people will be affected by it. is there atleast some type of justified compensation? but to all those thinking rudy is right...just think if in your town they said you couldnt have any type of pet you may have. rudy is a cynical, lieing person that is only out for his and his lobby'rs agenda. he is more of a government thug than anything else.
