getting frustrated :(

well i hsve s 400 wat hps goin vert in a 5' by bout 5n ha;f foot by 40inch hieght dpsce and im runnin 1 ten inch fan straight up at bulb at high speed i have a 170cfm,close to tht fan oushin air out of the area and anthr 12 inch fan blown in there at full speeed yet my temps are stil 83...wtf should i do??i kno thers ALOT of heat threads but i was readn n figured the 170 is to small? fuck....so i was also wonderin should i jst do a grow like anti n thundurkel with cfls??i have a METAL cab..shldnt be hard to cool..its about26" height about 36 inch width and depth is about 20 and a half....my growspace currently is in like the back of a cave n its a pai in the ass jst startin it off ..evrytime i gta check on my plants i come out with back pains from goin on all 4s to get to the spot haha n ive broke shit coomin in n out,,,,so....idk ive alrdy strtd bout 100 bux wrtha seeds tht my buddy gave me a grip ago wen he moved...i dnt wna wastem but i got like 8 lft...n i dnt feel like ima be able to give these babies the attention they deserve....so my ? is wat do you guys thnk i shld just do???bite the seed loss n sell my 400 on ebay er sumthn n get sum cfl for a cab n do it that way er say fck it....n do it....anthr thing id like to add is i hav ppl in the house...one time sum1 came home wile i was in growspace n i had to stay down ther 4 3HOURS!!!! til he left so he wldnt find it,,,,its rly been nuthn but a pain a cave grow sounded bomb at first but im not so sure anymor...wat would you guys do stuk wth my possesion???please chime inevery thng you guys say is welcome..

Does your temp max out at 83 or is it 83 in there all the time? Where is your intake coming from and where is your exhaust going to?

I say tough it out and just go for it. Depending on strain, I've done fine with the temp around 85. Also, I don't know how much you smoke, but the crop from a cfl grow wouldn't get me from one harvest to the next so a 400W HPS is the absolute minimum.

It seems that your not moving the hot air out of your grow area... can you afford to get an inline fan/blower fan? That would help a great deal.. And being in a cave like setting seems the hot air is just staying down there and causing temps to stay kinda high.. Also you have one fan pushing hot air out and another bringing that same hot air back in. id change that around.. Hope it works out for ya.. peace..

I may get flogged for saying this but, Imo, if your MAX temp is 83 you can still grow good bud. I've flowered at a steady 86 and the buds were still dense and sticky. Of coarse 76-78 is optimal but you shouldnt have too many issues with your temps. Just make sure you have good air circulation so as the air doesnt get stagnant. And keep a lookout for heat stress.

mintman: lowest ive seen with the lights on is 83 its about 85 all arnd wthout fans constantly on its bout 90.......... idk wat im doin wrng ive read circulation thread over and over and just connot get the concept right obviously...but exhaust is goin down farther in the cave like closer to wer you enter..and intake well....i geuss i dnt have 1?? i just have a shower curtain blockin the light from escapin the back basically so i thgt maybe fresh air would just come and go?? i dont know what im thinking anymor...u ever see those bing.com commercials??thts basically me...i kno it but i dnt understand it haha i have a 170 cfm pushin it out and my 2 fans i was tlkn bout are just in the grow room 1 pointed up at the light the other just blowing air around i geuss..and also to answer yer qeustion i basically smoke air n breathe smoke hahah ...but mybe if i switchd to the cfls i could add a second box down the road i jst dnt have money 4 everythng i wna do thts why i gta sell the 400 if i wna do smthn else,,,im just sick of the whole cave...if it do stick arnd aint guna be long,,,cuz i cant do tht everytime//so i was jst sayn sell it mybe sooner thn later get a btr price??thnx fer yer input mane k+ 4 u

i would still use the 170 cfm it can only help some, even if its for a smaller area.. it just sounds like you r moving the stale hot air back into your space.. good luck brother.. peace..

You need to get your ventilation situated properly. Visualize the path of travel that the air is going to take. You want to bring fresh air from one direction near the bottom of your growspace, swoosh around the room (or across the plants), and exit up and away in the other direction. If it's all one big cave and your intake and exhaust are near each other, you probably aren't taking full advantage of your 170cfm fan.

Pics would help figure this out.

EDIT: Is that 170cfm an inline fan? Not all fans are created equally...

its pretty easy actually, you need to remove the stale hot air in the grow, so you put the exhaust fan up high. MAKE SURE THE FAN IS VENTING OUTSIDE THE ROOM,not just outside the grow area... into the attic,outside, next room, or whatever, NOT JUSt RECIRCULATING!

intake should be @ the bottom of the room near the floor, opposite of the exhaust fan.

intake air is the most imporant, needs to be cold & fresh & low humidity. should probibly be 10-20 degrees cooler than the ideal grow area temp.. if you arnt pulling cold air into the room then how do you expect to cool the hot lights? during the summer im sure it will be airconditioned air, otherwise itll be too hot/humid..

if you have followed these steps & you are still having problems, then you need a bigger exhaust fan/ or cooler air coming into the room via the intake.

I didn't even see anyone ask these very important specific questions that need to be answered before anyone can give you an ansewer or educated guess.

1 ) Are we growing in a walk in closet,shallow closet,or a cabinet like the mills pride c-13's?

2 ) What are the ambient temps outside the growroom/growbox?Ambient temps would be the tempereature of the air the room the growbox or closet sits in or where you bring your fresh air intake from.If over 75F then you need to use some A/C to cool the ambient temps down.

3 ) what length is your duct run for exhuast?

4 ) Are we using passive intakes or active intakes?If passive how much surface area does each intake take up?

5 ) Where are you exhuasting the hot air to?If you just dump the exhuast air in the same room your grow or growbox is then you need to really lower the A/C or better yet exhuast into the attic or out an open window using a window box to place over the window.This is a small with five sides and one open side.The open side gets glued to the window frame and the we use a circular saw to cut out a hole the same size as your exhuast fan or exhuast ducting then we connect the ducting to this hole via a flange.This box usually made out of MDF (medium density fiberboard).

Just read thread in confusion at best, JNugg said it all at first I thought you was in an actual cave untill Shower Curtain was mentioned.. I must admit to just finishing a tasty bong of nice dark hash ! First thoughts are higher powered exaust fan and better circulation in all. Please answer JNugg and we can give more educated advice ..
