Gertz Grows - 1st Grow - Nirvana Mystery Seeds

Hey everyone,

Recently I decided to start growing my own medicine, Ill be damned if I'm going to continue to spend a ton of money just so I can sleep at night.

I'm starting small, a milliard 18"x30"x36" tent and mars hydro 300w LED light. I also purchased 10 Blue Mystic seeds from Nirvana while they were on sale a few weeks ago and it also came with 10 mystery seeds. Rather than jump into what I wanted first I figured I would get my sea legs by testing out the mystery seeds first.

Last Saturday I dropped 4 Mystery Seeds in some distilled water and let them sit for 48 hours. By Monday they all had roots showing so I drained the water and put them in a wet paper towel for another 24 hours and by Tuesday they had enough of a root to put into a jiffy pot and go under the light in a small dome.

Well Saturday night they all had roots coming out of the Jiffy pots so I transplanted them into 4" square pots made up of a soil mix of stuff I had around:

  • 1 Part Potting Soil
  • 2 Parts Peat Moss
  • 1 Part Perlite
  • 1/8 Part Orchid Mix (It had bark and lava rocks in it)
  • Some Worm Castings
  • Some Garden Lime (the peat and orchid mix are usually a little acidic)
I didn't take a lot of pictures my first week, but I wanted to end with a picture of all 4 sprouted seedlings. Two of them look great, the third looks like it got a little burned and I'm not sure what happened to the fourth. I'm hoping its a little shock from the mix and they will settle over the next few days.

I am having a few problems with temperatures. With the light being on 18 hours it gets up to 86 degrees in the tent with a 6" duct fan going full blast and a small 5" fan pulling air in through one of the vents. I have also left the other vents open to try and pull air in but it doesnt seem to help much.

Im thinking of two things; build a DYI air conditioning unit with a fan, 5 gal bucket and ice. Or put a vent in the closet its in to the attic, this isnt really ideal being in an apartment.

Thoughts?

Looks good, good luck! What are your temps like with that 300W? What are you doing for exhaust? Keep it up!

Thanks for the look and reply

After about 6 hours on it hits 84 to 86 degrees and maintains that temperature until it goes off after 18 hours.

I have a 6" exhaust duct fan blowing out the entire time the light is on and a 5" desktop fan as the intake next to an open mesh vent at the bottom of the tent.

Quick little update, not quite two weeks in.

Plant 1 and 2 look great, plant 3 is stabilized and growing much better, and plat 4 still has some issues but seems better. Plant 4 is still a little behind.

Sitting at almost 3 weeks from germination, plants 1-3 are all working on their 5th to 6th set of leaves and even have some side branching going on. Plant 4 is the runt, its getting better but is significantly behind the other 3

Plant 3 above has its leaves curling upwards a bit...maybe heat stress? I still haven't figured out good way to lower my temps from 84 degrees

are you running a fan for exhaust at all? if i were you i think i would get a 4 inch fan and filter with a speed controller. such a small area would allow you to run the fan on a lower setting for less noise and the smell will be taken care of. this will also likely greatly lower your temps.

good luck, i'll be checking in for sure. :)

Thanks for the comment

I have a 220CFM exhaust fan in the tent pulling air out at the top and a small little 6" desk fan circulating air at the bottom neat an intake opening. The core problem is its in a closet that has no air flow so over time the closet heats up.

Im going to try leaving the closet door open for the day and see what that does...in the end I should probably either exhaust into the attic which may be a bit risky. Or I could vent into the connecting bathroom that has an exhaust as well.

yeah, i think i would choose the bathroom route over the attic personally. good luck either way!

So the last few days I have left the opening on the tent unzipped and the door to the closet cracked open a bit and it stayed at ~75 degrees all day. That's an 8-10 degree swing just from the heat that builds up for 18 hours in the closet. Im wondering if there is a way to passively vent the closet...maybe cut a hole and install a duct cover to make it look like air conditioning?

And we are 5 weeks in, all 4 plants are doing good. I transferred into larger pots at week 4 and burned some of the leaves in the process but everything bounced back quick.

I also flipped to 12/12 at week 4 since they hit a foot tall, need to make sure there is room for them to flower.

Plant 1 is a little over a foot now. Has okay side branching and smells

Plant 2 is the tallest, probably about 14" and has little to no smell. Its a bit stretchy and has larger node distance than any of the others. It also has little to no side branching.

Plant 3 is a little over a foot, bushy and has good side branching. Smell is on par with Plant 1

Plant 4 is squat, stinky, and bushy. This was the one I was going to pull because I didnt think it was going to make it and now has the most ideal profile for my grow situation.

No pictures tonight but I'm pretty sure plants 1, 2 and 3 are ladies and Plant 4 is a dude.

I think Im just going to let them go, I like the squatness of plant 4 and the branching on plant 3...let them breed!

Well its a wrap for my first grow.

Learned a shit ton and will make adjustments moving forward.

Lessons Learned
- With my small space I vegged too long, should have switched at 3 nodes tall and went right into flower
- Need to vent the closet...going to drill out some vent holes in the ceiling and see if the heat raising passively is enough. If not Ill get another vent fan
- Mystery seeds have a good chance of being Sativas...which dont work for me medicinally or grow space wise
- Soil was fine but Im going to try coco in small hempy buckets
- Patience is a virtue, I could have probably let them go another week or two but with all the issues I had I decided to cut my losses and restart
- I didnt use any nutes really...I did put some in the soil mix and used some earth worm castings but other than that it was RO water the whole time...this time Im using nutes
- Keep an eye on your timer, something happened at one point and the cycle got offset...this is the main reason I dont think it ever finished correctly

New grow incoming...ignoring my previous advise and using 4 more of the nirvana mystery seeds. Plant 4 was a nice indica heavy plant but I overwatered it and removed it after it was clear it wasnt coming back.
