GENERATORS

im exploring a few different growing methods and means and i was wondering for those of you that use or have used disel generators, what are the basic logistics. how big are these things, how much would it cost to purchase a generator to supply power for 10K lights? is it expensive to fuel these things, how often do you have to refuel?

i kno these questions are subjective to the brand and model of the generator but im just trying to get a basic idea about the technology as on this subject i am below a noob. peace.

Go with propane over desiel.

Propane burns clean, and no chance of spills which is a problem in Humboldt and Mendo.

Most big shows have two gen sets, as they need to be rebuilt every X amount of hours.

Remember the gen set has to have a load not less than 10-15% of what it rated for, or it hurts the equipment.

Propane companys will set a large tank at no charge, they want to sell you propane.

I do know a guy who has a hookup on desiel who pays a buck a gallon, so that make s sense for them.

The rebuilds will be less frequent and less expensive with propane.

DIESEL GENERATOR...
(as your primary power source)

Stay away from “consumer” generators, regardless of buzz-words like “heavy-duty.” The generators on most of the 3600 RPM machines available through hardware outlets and discount stores are fine for their intended uses: occasional power tools, pumps, and emergencies. Most will fail quickly if subjected to sustained operation at anywhere near their maximum output, let alone their optimistically-rated output. The engines on these machines are well-suited to their intended use, which is occasional light-duty operation.

Almost any generator designed to operate at 1800 RPM is also designed to run quietly and dependably for years while producing its rated output. Commercial/industrial equipment is the best way to go. If you live on a homestead or farm and for some reason do not want to install a diesel generator, do consider the welder/generator combination. Again, be careful. There are welder/generators on the market that run at 3600 RPM. And though they are designed for industrial use, they will not last as long as their slower-running cousins. They are also noisier. And you will have to endure the excessive noise for the duration of it’s service life, even if that is shorter than you’d hoped.

Diesel engines outlast gasoline engines by a wide margin, burn considerably less fuel, and require no maintenance other than regular oil and filter changes.

Come over to the Dark side my son, lolol. Jokin. Come over to this thread and you will find alot of info you might not know. We've been talking alot over the few months. Good luck and i'll be going with a DIESEL GENERATOR myself. There isn't a problem with spills, if you take care of your setup from day one. Check out the spill container near the last page. Not a problem with one of those. Just my opion, check the thread out and you should be happy. Plenty of pages of info.
Good Luck,
BG

Any of you guys that use Generators would you recommend using them in a City enviorment or only out in the Country because from what ive heard there kinda noisy. and how hard would it be to setup proper ventilation while using a GEN?

u can get sound prrof trailers for the genrators. which is a pretty cool idea. buy a house for a grow bring in the trailer plug er up do a couple grows move on and expand and buy another genrator. their mobility is great and that way your huge power draws can stay off the grid.

Wow I did not ever think about that you got any links or pics of these trailers?

I've only had to use a generator once when 3 hurricanes went over my house one year lol,my 5550 Generac Wheelhouse still sits in the box after 3 years(knock on wood)havent had to use her yet.It was a pain and a loud hassle,if electrons are provided through conductors from the good ole lectric company thats what I'll use lol

well in certain places it probably cheapr and safer to go with a generator. and ofcourse there is a learning curve. but alot of ppl who use them regularly swear by them. you dont have to put ur entire grow on the generator just enough that your not pulling too much juice form the grid. u may be able to get away with 10 lights in a house for a while but with a genraor you can double that in a house with out raising suspicion (as long as your genrator is not drawing attenction, is sound prrog trailer). its portable its effecient and great lol.
