figured i'd share this in case it serves some.
I used to own a lot of apartments - had one 6 unit bldg that whenever i got a complaint about roaches, i'd spray the whole building, otherwise spraying just one apt, would simply chase the roaches into the other apartments, then i'd get calls from them.
One apartment, with two female chemistry majors living in it, would always tell me, not to bother doing their apt. So i finally asked one of the roommates if she liked roaches, i mean, wtf.
Told me she used boric acid (comes in a powder form, real fine like talcum powder). She'd simply put it in a small tray (3X3") she made by folding aluminum foil, then dunk some bread in some sugary water, and cut into small squares - that'd be the bait. She put the bread pcs in the trays, let it dry, then powdered the bread and the tray with some boric acid. Then she'd put the trays behind the refrigerator, stove and maybe inside the kitchen sink cabinet, ie dark places.
the roaches pick it up on their feet pads and take it back to their nest and it kills the young as well.
All i know is, it's really low toxicity and it works, but not just for roaches, spider crickets, silverfish, you name it. We had a bad problem with those spider crickets, so i put 4 trays in the crawl space under the house, and a few in the basement - end of problem.
Haven't thought to try it on fungus gnats but for household type pests, i've used it for 30+ years and won't use anything else. In fact, after the first application, it's usually 2-4 years before i have to use it again. It does eradicate them in fairly short time frame, like 2-4 days.It can be had at your pharmacy, it's not a controlled substance, and last time i purch'd some, was $16 for a quart bottle. I've since noticed, there's a german brand roach control called "Roach Pruf", comes in white powder form, and some folks had raved about it. Checked the label for contents, and it listed boric acid 99.9%
It does work well.
