Gender fluidity in the cannabis world.

Interesting video about the 'hermie' issue... one of those vexacious topics not uncommon in these hallowed pages. This guy also has some interesting landraces growing in his garden. Some of you may be interested in checking some of his vids out.

Theres a peer reviewed white paper out of Hungary that concludes all cannabis is XY, with varying levels of Y suppressing hormones.

Either way, its been shown that very rarely is cannabis not monoecious in some way or some extent

ive discovered this strange situation myself growing out dj outback x vietnam. my first round of sexing 8 males 0 female. second round, which was sexed in same tent with males present 7 females 1 male. i kept 2 males- one from each round. the first male, i call him rubber band man threw pollen and i put him back in veg room. he proceeded to grow all pistils some of which pollinated and now he is growing his own seeds with no balls in sight. now it seems like this could be a case where a monoceious plant first grows pollen and then pistils to pollinate. like the first round did not sense females so they became males. the second round was in presence of males so went right to female. all the females stayed firm no seeds at all. also they have these jug like preflowers at the nodes which it seems could facilitate either gender. weird stuff

Yeah, these plants definitely sense their environment, to include what other plants are around.
I had more problems with herms when i grew sensi buds.
But once I started keeping males around, sexual stability became more....stable

Ive seen the opposite to you in some similar stuff to what you describe. Like males looking as normal yet as they get a little further into flower start growing strange weird single thin tiny male parts were they shouldn't be on the plant. Such as inbetween the nodes along the main branch from the soil upto were it starts branching out. I found those to be excellent.
With males like you describe with pistols showing have you found wen you pollinated a good female the resulting seeds the ratio balance of male/female seeds is different to normal ?

I'm germinating q few of the male seeds now for first time I'll be interested to see the ratio plus possible yy males.
Another interesting situation is how the seeds grow outside of the bract attached at one end of seed. They split like a baked potato and keep going until the whole thing is exposed. But they are attached firmly to the hole on one side of seed. Almost gymnosperm activity. Panama Congo Korea tom hill haze grinspoon ,Laos Muang singh, NH so all share this naked seed trait.
Co occurs with nearly zero pistils and the bracts are shaped like pointed footballs. I personally believe these lines are a further step back in time since they've been shown to posses an ancestor missing from genetic studies tracking says. Next I Wana flip this he she see what comes out will it throw pollen this time too
. Sinsimilla is responsible for tons of desirable genes being eradicated due to herms. So there are probly e tire genotypes we don't experience because of the monocy .
High ethylene males will throw pistils but couldn't that be a good thing? Obviously pollen is bad from a female, but that doesn't mean a male who throws pistils will create daughters who throw pollen. Its just assumed.

i probably have the same Thing. I grow Moliotiko, a Greek Landrace, and had the half of the Plantcount showing "Hermies" , the other half of the Plantcount are firm Females, no Hermies on them..

First i thought, oh no, ive no time to select out hermies, and even Fullblown, they show 50 percent pollensacks and 50 percent Pistils on the Hermi-portion of the crop..

But now i realise they arent the usual Hermies, and i can happily continue my project.. Nice!

JIHA: Why have you bred dioecious cultivars while many other hemp breeders have developed monoecious cultivars?

IB:
The natural state in which hemp appears was and is dioecious. Monoeciousness is artificial in hemp, it can only exist with the help of man, and without selection, the dioecious state will return in two or three generations. It is therefore very hard and demanding to keep 90 to 95 % monoeciousness during seed multiplications.

I was about to post the same article...

in all the books I've read, Ernest Small to Clarke I always get it that way. Also here on icmag there are some good threads on this topic, with some interesting interventions by Sam skunkman

Surely should be sub-dioecious ? As a fully dioceous state is not present and one could argue that the dioceous state is only present with the help of man too.

Hence mono is XX and a female thing and contains intersex/cosexuals etc the presence of a Y changes this but the intersex/cosexuals are still there.

hermaphrodite

We often confuse hermaphroditism or use it synonymously for the term monoecious. However, a hermaphroditic plant develops flowers with female and male organs, while a monoecious plant has separate male and female flowers, present on the same plant and sometimes on the same branch.
therefore
if solitary male flowers appear completely independent of female flowers on the same plant, that plant is monoecious.
if a female flower develops male stamens that arise from inside the calyx it is hermaphroditism.
