G'DAY! A guide to Aussie lingo 8)

Like the strange animals that roam this continent the Australian language has broken away from the rest of the world and evolved (devolved?) over time to become a unique subset of the English language. Well ... kinda ... I don't think the Queen would be too impressed

The nature of Aussie slang reflects the harsh land and the no-nonsense "let's just get on with it" attitude as well as humor of Aussie ppl, which is why a lot of words and phrases are often shortened - "good day" became "g'day", "barbecue" became "barbie", etc, and a lot of words are introduced simply because they're more amusing than their original - why say eggs when you can say bumnuts?

When I'm in icmag chat I often end up saying things that none of my American friends understand so I thought I'd help bridge the culture gap and post some Aussie slang definitions. Happy reading!

PenoMenal, thanks for sharing the info! I have always liked the Aussies slang, I havent heard some of those before. At least Aussies slang is surrounded by proper English and therefore one can understand the meaning of what their saying.

Unlike Ebonics which is just a poor excuse for a failure to grasp the basics of english. When in doubt, throw in an "izzle" sound in the middle of any word or just string along random thoughts togather and insinuate that they actually mean something...Ebonics is essentially lazziness at it's finest.

Example:
Ebonics: Yo G, you frontin me?

English: Excuse me, my peer, are you attempting to influence me to engage in a violent act with you?

Ebonics: Yo gots to git dooes Benjamins so's yous can git dat bling bling fo yo ride.

English: You need to get money so your able to get expensive accessories for your car.

Plim-Pizzle my nizzle Phenowizzle, don' foget tha six-fo, chuch, dawg up in da hood, chilly me grilly, fo sho........

Something I heard a while back made me laugh.

When the first Mad Max movie was released in the US, it was released with subtitles....not sure what to say about that.
