Comedian Garry Shandling died at an L.A. area hospital on Thursday
The 66-year-old star was not suffering from any illness ... as far as we know ... so, it appears this was sudden. A source connected to Shandling says he was healthy and speaking to people on Thursday morning.
Our source says there was a 911 call from "The Larry Sanders Show" star's home, and he was transported to the hospital. We're told Shandling was alive when he arrived at the hospital.

He was one of my favorite comedians. I hadn't seen him in a while, but this was unexpected at 66.

According to TMZ, Garry called 911 himself after suffering a "massive heart attack," but was found unconscious when paramedics reached his home.

Sources connected with the comedian tell TMZ ... he spoke with a doctor friend of his Wednesday late afternoon, complaining he was not feeling well. The doctor was concerned enough that he came to Shandling's home and checked him out.

Garry complained he was achy and short of breath. He did not complain of chest pains. The doctor told Garry if he was not feeling well the next day he should go to the ER to check it out. Garry said if he wasn't feeling better he'd probably go sometime Thursday afternoon.

Cannot believe doctor (and being his friend) did not insist going to the ER with shortness of breath! Be it precursor of heart attack or pulmonary emboli, that was inexcusable not to have him checked out at the time he was experiencing symptoms.

Really bummed. He made me laugh. Watching Louis CK in memory and will look on YouTube for a few of Garry's shows. RIP.

Louis CK is my favorite living comedian. He's joked about going out like this. You kind of expect it with his lifestyle choices. I didn't expect Shandling to just die out of the blue at 66.

George Carlin went out the same way at 71. He seemed happy and healthy, then he had a fatal heart attack out of nowhere. Maybe it's better that way.

Greatest theme song ever!

This is the theme to Garry's show,
The opening theme to Garry's show.
This is the music that you hear
As you watch the credits.

Cheers to an often overlooked, truly funny man.
