Dear fellow Icmag'ers,

edit 1/12/2010

I'm heading up to Cali in january, because I'll get some time off and definetly want to visit the place and enjoy it !

I'm coming to the US for the second time (first i just visited michigan few years back, what !!!), it s a good opportunity to come and see my girlfriend, and check out what's up there !

My plan has now change to just travelling around, I won't be looking for any job there since visas are way too hard to get.

So I'm looking into any advice on what to do in Cali related to my passion !

It has occured to me that moving to California would be an interesting idea... I was told many times about how cool are life and people there, as well as the country side and the sea shore.
Being a traveler, I have to discover the place, deeply :) So I guess at least one year should be a nice start ...

I will be looking for a job in my field, but since i need a special visa it could take time to find an employer...
Then find a house, and start growing, for personal use (1 to 2kW, I'm a big smoker and usually have many friends that love the dank!)

Meanwhile, I will have a little money and lot of time to travel around, visit, enjoy ! I think I will love the place, and I definetly have to discover the cali Ganja scene, dispensaries, big events...

I'm in waiting for money to get there, and I was thinking arriving in december... Any cool stuff to do at this time ?

Also, I remember reading there are other quite friendly states around for growing, I could def extend my job search to them... I'm open to any suggestion :)

Thanks !

Back from hash treking ?

California is a big place

You will definitely have to narrow down your search

Beautiful almost everywhere ... but different too

Get a map .. talk it up .. and think about what type of life you want or need

Good first steps

For traveling - I love Lonely Planet travel books - a lot of good and useful information there

Oregon is beautiful and grower friendly too

Wishing you the very best

Start in San Francisco and the Bay area and move your way north and south from there along the coast. Go up to Southern Oregon and see the Emerald Triangle, i.e. Humboldt, Mendocino, and Trinity County. Go out to Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park. The go south towards Monterey Bay, Carmel, Santa Cruz, etc. and enjoy the surfer towns. Eventually make your way towards SoCal....

Well, being a penguin in all, you might find it hard to be taken seriously. I bet you could probably find a paying sympathizer in the climate change community.

:)

I'm just messing with you, good luck with your adventure.

^^^^What he said

I lived in So-Cal for a minute and now live in Nor-Cal. So-Cal is cool if you're going to spend a bit of time checking out the various beach areas(Venice Beach, Pacific Beach, etc....) and concrete jungles(where shopping and consuming are king).I prefer Nor-Cal for the peace and openness of the people. What I liked most about So-Cal was that it was warm and there were a bunch of reggae shows. We get plenty of reggae up here and I've learned to enjoy the weather in the bay. It's beautiful all the way up the coast.

Hello all,

first, thanks to all your tips that definetly I ll take in consideration... !

my plan has a bit changed since i won't get a loan to come.

At the moment I m gathering some money to pay for the plane ticket, and I will need to find a job real quick there, and without working visa...

I ve been told that there is a lot of trimming jobs there, and love to hear some advices about that.

I have a contact there (not ic) that told me she should be able to hook me up with some ppl looking for trimmers, and even if not she told me it is not so hard.

Would you californian Ic mates have any advice on these jobs, are they hard to find ? Where to find them, not exactly where but which part of cali ?

I'm very used to trimming for long periods, and doing many stuff with herb, so I'ld be a good worker :) I can also take care of plants, and help improving systems...

I'm french, never been to the US except holidays in michigan, and I am honest as hell, so if any of you have some directions to help me, please feel free to send me a pm !

Can't wait to be there :)
I 'll keep you updated anyway !

T,
Check out craigslist. There are frequently postings for people either looking for, or offering their services for trimming. Several listings right now in Humboldt looking for trimmers. Good luck in/on your search!

There's an MPP party in Sonoma on December 11th. It's by far one of the most outrageous parties I've been to and I've been to parties at the Cannes Film Festival, Sundance and Toronto Film festivals. People dress up in black tie or costumes. As far as NYE, it pretty much sucks in LA. You can't get in anywhere for under $100 and it's crappy food and crappy entertainment. I was thinking about having a cannabis celebration in a mansion but my attorney is telling me to lay low for now.

Good luck in your travels. I LOVE LA!

Hey thanks for your replies

el dub i ll probably not be able to reach calif till the end of december..
I ll be looking for the party you re talking 'bout, but i'm not sure how ? Dead related ? not sure what it means....

can.i.buz, I m not interested in those kind of fancy expensive parties, but more like smaller one with smokers gathering, more like some kind of free party, even in the countryside would be fun! cannabis celebration sounds definetly fun, but official one, def hard to do... you should just go for a small party between growers friend, i usually do that every year...
Also i'm considering more around SF than LA, not sure why but i heard much more positive advice for LA.... not sure :)

again thanks for the advice, looking forward for more :)

The problem with icmag is that you can't talk about meet ups. I get it. It's for our protection but it's frustrating too. I posted a thread looking for a growing partner/boyfriend and it was taken down in a matter of minutes and I got a one time pass but they were going to kick me off the site for it.

LA is a much better place to live because of the weather, the creativity, and the music IMO but Northern California is better for dealing with LEO. (in most cases)

By dead related, I mean any band featuring members of the Grateful Dead. These are usually psychedelic events fueled by copious amounts of LSD or shrooms. (Not sure if dirty hippies are your scene.)

Back in the day, New Year's eve shows with the grateful dead were quite the extravaganzas. Father time usually made an appearance as well as the new year's baby. I'm pretty sure father time jetted in on a reefer fueled joint rocket ship once...

However, I won't reach the bay area until some time after the new year.
