Fridge Growing...

I had an idea to turn an old broken down refridgerator into a growroom... Anyone know if it has been done before? I would use the freezer to germinate and for seedlings and then eventually move the plants down into the main refridgerator. Of course the fridge would not be using the frion to keep it cool but instead install and portable electric heater with digital thermometer on it to regulate a temperature and to simulate wind by using the fan. I would install a dehumidfier and exhaust fan (possibly a small mounted oscillating fan if possible.) I dont know if its possible to replace the frion with a Co2 tank so the fridge would be pumping in carbon dioxide and keeping it at the ideal 78% for growing. I would have three adjustable Gro-Lux plant life bulbs hooked into a timer so it would get the appropriate amount of light. Obviously i would remove the majority of the shelving to accomodate the plants...

suggestions/advice welcome

I've seen several converted fridges as grow spaces on other websites; I don't think I've seen any here on ICMag. They do have some advantages (insulation, for one).

I think the most interesting, though, was the fridge that was used as an entryway into a secret grow area.

I did it with pretty good results.

Placed a 270w sun agro lamp in the top and also had a seperate veg chanber down below. worked well enough to yield me 2-3 oz per run. not huge output but definately nice from limited space

Yeah Blatant bought that fridge right out from under me. its was pretty cool, I had rigged the cooling system to kick on if the temps got above a set level. It worked ok, I think B-man just used it to ve and not flower due to its size

Hey gblaze! Got your PM and will respond to it, in depth, later. However, our very own Texas Kid was toying with converting an old steel refridgerator into a grow space. Any questions you might have he would be more than willing, I'm sure, to help you with. Just tell him that I told you to PM him and he'll give you a hand. Be looking for my PM as I will get to it soon as possible.

looks like i might try hydro in the fridge... any suggestions fellow growers? havent invested much time in researching hydro too much yet but will obviously asap. Any good website reccommendations for the details of using hyrdo as a means to grow?

This may be a little off topic here, but I wonder how well a older working fridge would work for a rez/water chiller? I'm not sure but I just looked in my fridge and it seems to be all sealed and wouldn't leak if some one was to flip it on it's back and fill it with water.Mind you,you would have to block it up a liittle underneath.Anyone seen this done, just curious?

reg: theres a thread about making a DIY water chiller out of one of those little water dispenser things that are in offices and stuff. It would take a lot less power than a fridge to run, even less than a mini fridge, and would chill all ya needed most likely unless you have a huge op

i almost feel bad posting here............i feel like if the thread has been dead for 10 months it should almost stay that way... just my opinion though

Irish, Yeah I just noticed the dates at the beginning of the thread, lol.Usually if I see a thread on the main page I don't bother looking at the dates,oh well! But any ways,I saw that thread,I think it was by The Dopest, but my rez is 100 gal,not sure how much those water coolers will cool that much water.I suppose if I needed to I could use a couple of them, cuz water chiller is ridiculiously expensive.

o yea, with a res that size it might not work. I do wonder though, because once the water is down at that temperature that you need it, which is not really that cold (68-72 degrees F) it should not take much work for the system to keep it there. The system is just basically regualing the temperature slightly, at least thats how it probably should be

Yeah my thoughts exactly,I,m just in the midst of moving and what not, trying to envision where everything in the grow room should go with out actually having it arrived here yet(Fuckin slow ass movers!2days late alraedy). But I was thinking that if I sealed off my growroom, and have a remote rez on the outside of the room, but the only problem with that is the heat regester is in the sealed part of the room, the part of the room not sealed can get down to a balmy -2 - -8 c.Mabey I'll put a heater near the rez and try to regulate it that way.If it's in the grow room itself,I'm affraid it'll get too hot and I'll need an expensive chiller, onthe otherhand if it's outside of the room, I'm affraid it'll be too cold, man I can't win!

Was searchin and found this.... We had that question also.

Our thought was this...................

Could you:

take your regular fridge that is allready running (rather than add another or getting a little mini fridge) or getting an old mini fridge. Anyways, drill a hole through the top/side or what not, put an air pump inside the fridge, run your air hose from the fridge to the res/water or even your little pc grow/'mini grow/small closet, seal us the hole w/some silicon, maybe use timer.

blow some cold air into your problem......

whatta think?
