Wow, that's amazing. No nutrients in the soil... it's all coming from the runoff?

No. the soil is also littered with organic debris from plant material through to natural guanos. the runnoff is the main source of irrigation, carrying some nutrients.

Hey Doc,

Well I've tested coco extensively and I find the downside to using it is it binds potassium and phosphorus, that why canna product have a P/K booster in the end, this is fine if your growing using Canna but for organic growers it presents a real problem, plus it binds calcium and magnesium. :badday:
It's a great medium to mix with soil but I find that for use with organics it doesn't quite meet the hype it's seing in coco grows using the whole canna lineup. I find I had to water more often and that the topsoil would dry out too damn fast. :fsu:
I always topdress my girls in flowering with guano, as water seeps through the topsoil it pickups broken down nutes and carries into the rootzone, to me it's a natural way of fertilizing as soil goodies are seeped to deeper rootzone areas with the rain.

Thanks Suby,

I must admit I like the coco mix (and the fact it dries at top). I don't like canna ferts, haven't used them for years,,, (they impart that 'canna' taste...
Top-dressing with bat guano is a very good idea  thanks,,, if I can't get any bottled organic fert to freeze well,,, this will be the best line of attack. would use dry-bar bat guano, courtesy of me brethren sativa3000 :joint:

* the coco-fibre and pebbles used were 2nd hand. : recovered from another room, washed, then seperated by sieve, then remixed with canna professonal mix. This is the only reason we get away with using the loose term "organic".

There is NOTHING 'organic' about the perlite added to the soil mix! Ditto coco fibre isn't the most ecological resource! the volumes of fresh (possible drinking) water used by Canna (rather than salt water, as in most coco fibre processes) could go into many a dry mouth!

On the flipside, fibre is a by-product, often produced with fair-trade.

rant over...

Bostrom ty for the props man. :joint:

DL I hear you on the Canna "taste", I never used them because I didn't like the smoke after a friend tried it. :bat:
Whether we use peat (which are natural pooling sites for earth acidity in peat bogs) or coco (lots of water to rinse out the slat from floating the coco fibre in salt water pools to degrade) it's impotant to realize that recycling soil as you have done allow us to make the most of these precious resources.
I'm sorry my answers always involve things that don't come from a bottle (so far you'd have to stab me to get to drop my Liquid Karma though) but it's about knowing how to brew your own and keep $ in our own pockets.

see whatcha did you got me

cool Suby  I'm all for anything that doesn't involve plastic bottles (often the labels cost more than the contents... lol). all old soil is recycled outdoor,,, I never use rockwool,, and refrain from chemical ferts... only buy organic ferts and part organic soil to support local shops

Batguano it is then :D turned into the substrait prior to bloom. Any tips on how best to apply???

It is about time to water. I'm gonna freeze a mini glacier now
far out dudes  (my freezer is running anyhow, so its ecological, sort of ...) hehe

Tirich Mir

Tirich Mir

the water is freezing :biglaugh:
the glacial hydromorphology test (aka Tirich Mir experiment) will begin in the mist of morn, as songbird call to mates from high in the orchard trees, and the first rays of light are finally cast upon the base of this plastic bucket... then the ice will melt ... lol

peace n light that dispels myth... :chin:

the next glacier :chin: :biglaugh: will be of a better design, it will have more ridges and will be made from boiled water so the ice is clear  :D
If you didn't realise, this is a silly test, a test, nothing more, nothing less, a test. a test with ice not water for google's sake.. lol
pon ya learn ya grow...

mi biobizz nutes say to keep them in a dry dark place at room temperature. I think they say this to keep any microbiology alive like beneficial bacteria and mycology. This being said. I use some proffessional peat/perlite mix from canada that is innoculated wth beneficial fungi and it says not to let it freeze but the place I got it from left it outside all winter and it was definetely frozen when i got it and it still works fine. Also the bioBizz nutes got frozen in my car and they still work fine. My Kalong bat guano got frozen and it still works fine. I think because I am using organic compost from Fafard canada in my soil mix that it is a "living soil mix" even with the guano getting frozen or whatever. Soma told me that it is best to have your water around 68-80 degrees ferenhieght. Otherwise it could stunt the plants if it is too cold. I am very interrested in your experiment because i have too many of my outdoor plants that get stunted by cool temps in the spring. For example I put out a diesel seedling in early may that reached a total hieght of 6 inches, yielding about 1 joints worth of bud. I also put out a diesel seedling in late june that grew 8 feet tall in one month's time with a trunk about 1.5 inches in diameter. This is just an example of how cold temps can stunt a plant. This being said, I believe the nycd I got from soma (even though it thrives outdoors in NL) is mostly sativa. I would really like to know how your true chitral responds to the cold. mybe it would be a good outdoor variety for me to look into.
One other strange memory I have about the chitral. I was sitting outside of tweedy's coffeeshop next to the Vondelpark and the guy in charge of the weed there was telling me about the chitral I was smoking, saying that it was a sativa from an indica producing region. I have a hard time believing that a sativa would even grow up there but I have always wondered about it to this day. It is true that the chitral has longer more slender leaves than a typical afghan or like a Buddah's Sister or Top Tibet type of Indica.???????

I would measure the amount of water you want to give and then freeze it. It seems like after the ice melted it was only a fluid ounce or less of water. I know this is what you want, but it might be the reason that the seedlings are looking tall and spindly. This could be caused by the variety they are, but I would like to see what happens if they get twice as much water next time. Even in Chitral they should have enough water when they are so young and then dry out during flowering.

Does anyone know if you can freeze organic nutrients ???

Yes, I freeze my homade fish poop all the time. Works great. The ice idea is a great one. Keep us posted on the out come.

Cool. thanks for the input

Shrimp/prawns are usually frozen before they get shelled :chin:
