freezer chiller

I have searched and read but i need a updated confirmation before i spend money.

Theoretically water would run from the res to the heat point, from there through a aluminum/copper coil in this freezer back to the res. Will this work and be worth $150 with a energy consumption rating of $30 a year?

I was thinking of this myself recently, I have a chest type freezer and thought of using it to add another 2 1000w lamps in my 6000w room but I'm maxed out on my AC

Yes, closed loop from res back to res.Either the coil will be cooled by air but the water in the coil might freeze. Or fill a bucket holding the coil full of antifreeze and put that in the freezer.

I know it works from reading various other post.I am just still slightly uncertain and wanted someone to say they are doing it NOW and that it work's. I read a post regarding putting a pond liner in chest freezer and filling it with water. Or just two buckets full of antifreeze.If you understand the concept...

Turns a freezer into a fridge, which wouldn't freeze what's going thru the coil. Good luck. -granger
Note: you need to have a freezer that, if power is lost, it will come back on when power is restored. One of the Sear's models doesn't.

will work for a DWC set up but will not work to watercool lights or your room.

A refrigerator is not made to have a "load" on it. It is made to remove heat over time and then maintain. If the compressor runs all the time it will last months. If the minifrige is solid state peltier it likely will not work at all.

Keep copper away from water with mineral salts in it.

Hey budley, I agree with "load". I read another article last night saying the same.
I think some people got away with it because they had a large enough freezer meaning a chest freezer but even then who know's how long the compressor would last. I'm really going to have to run a 280 amp$$$ legit water chiller, which my 4x4 doesn't justify......

No way no how... tried it in a deep freeze even but with any kind of real load it falls on its face pretty fast.
Save up an get a decent used one your electric bill will thank you. Your gonna spend in electric what you would on a good chiller running your fridge to death not really doin the job.

hate to hear that, what/how much did you try to cool with it?
I have a good sized chest stye deep freezer laying around doing nothing but keeping french fries, chicken and fish frozen

Guess i'll have to run a water chiller on a timer as little as i can.

If you need cold water on the cheap, use a window air conditioner. You can turn a 100 dollar unit into a chiller in an hour.

l know exactly what your talking about but generally were talking 4.5-6 amps which is double the power of a 1/10 hp chiller at 2.0-2.5 amps. Yes, since your not using all of the AC it might run less power but......

Light load and lots of insulation on the rez will keep the cycling to a minimum.

I recall reading a pretty interesting modification of water cooler used to cool water for dwc that sounded pretty workable. Hard to believe the prices on the commercial units. The one person who I know that bought a commerical unit now has it sitting on a shelf. Can't help wonder what % of grow gear that is the case with.
