Hey all, this is being discussed in my other active thread, but I thought I'd share it here.
Free nute samples are nice, especially as a new grower. There's alot of options. So it's nice to get your hands on some samples to see what works for you without having to commit the dollars to a nute line up you aren't sure of.
I've emailed 3-4 nute companies so far. I have heard back from Fox Farms, and Botanicare. Fox farms sent me a sample of Grow Big and Big Bloom (although had to be shipped to my cousin in the US and brought over to me in Canada, it was enough to take 1-2 plants through a full grow)
The process is simple. Go to a nute company page you are interested in, and go to their contact us page. Send them an email, I usually say I am growing tomatoes, that I haven't been getting great results with my current nutrients (name a brand) and that a friend had great results with their product. I ask if they have free samples so I can compare their products with my current program, to see which better fits my need. I thank them for any assistance they can provide.
If you are going to do this, change your letters, companies will notice if suddenly every one is sending in requests for free nute samples with the same email. Choose a veggie, come up with how you heard about their product etc. If you get free samples, it is worth the time to craft a note. Make sure you mention your medium and grow setup, but do not mention illegal activities or they will not send.
These are the 2 responses I received;
Fox Farms;
I had to have them(FF) send them to my cousin who lives just over the border in Buffalo, as they don't sell, and cannot thus send samples to Canada.
Response;
"Because we do not distribute in Canada, and we do not hold the rights to sell in Canada, I cannot send you any samples. I apologize for the red tape, and wish that I could, because I’m sure you would like the results! Thanks for your interest in Foxfarm, and good luck!"

After an email, explaining I could pick them up at my cousin's in the US, I didn't hear anything back, but 3 weeks later my cousin called, as they had arrived.
I also sent a letter to Botanicare, very similar, and got this response
"Thank you for your interest in Botanicare’s premium, hydroponic gardening products and your recent sample request. To get a better understanding of what the best Botanicare nutrient for you to trial is please follow the below link and complete a short survey about your growing needs. Once we receive the results we will send* you out either your requested sample or a nutrient line that we believe will work best for you. "
And they provide a link. *4-6 weeks to arrive.
Thought I'd share. Nice to be able to see what works before choosing a company.
Also, please don't abuse this. For the good off everyone! If you don't need them, don't ask! I know that is a bit unfair, but if abused it could go away, and this can be a huge help towards new, or low funded growers.
Moots.
