Awesome find!

Lots of great tracks pulled into this mix. I first started listening to rap in the late 80s. Before then I was a total metal head. I listed to stuf like Slayer, Exodus, Megadeth, and other bands that qualified as the more hardcore type of metal. Then one day I woke up and my wife was playing N.W.A.'s Straight Outta Compton. Forgetaboutit! That shit was so damn awesome from the very first seconds I heard it that I was hooked.

After NWA I bounced to Public Enemy and then started exploring all the other groups of the time (Digital Underground, Gangstarr, Nice n Smooth, De La Soul, Brand Nubian, and so on). Although I tend to like the cerebral rap more than the typical 'gangsta rap' , I must admit TuPac is probably my favorite performer of them all. I'm not too in touch with the stuff put out nowadays, It seems stuff after about 2000 or so is rubbish to me...must mean I am getting old. :)

I am also likely one of the only white boys living in the Texas that believes most of the philosophies of the Five Percenters. :D

I'm the same way linenoise. Thanks for stopping by. I liked less hardcore metal more classic stuff before hip hop. They say people who appreciate hip hop appreciate good classic music because its entwined. It also works the other way around.

good find man , ive always loved rap but only mostly oldschool eastcoast type shit. Masta Ace , Rakim , OGC , Big L , Anything that primo produced or dilla , gangstar is alrite but only because of primo , of course biggy , too stoned to think of some others but i kno im missin some favs.

The new rap that is out these days is garbage tho , Lean wit it rock wit it , Soulja Boy , Party like a rockstar , all that kinda shit is GARRRBAAAGEEEEE . Like Sheek louch says "i dont lean wit it rock wit it , C im from tha borough son i squeeze wit it cock wit it"

Id rather listen to country music than sum weak ass new age southern anthems , atleast they have real lyrics.

that is the fucking shit, im only a third the way through listening, awesome work by the dj. the music industry needs that kind of effort injection into the mainstream.

Glad you guys liked it.

This seems to have been online for a long time. I found this on a music board one day when icmag was down (what a horrible day of waiting).

The selling point is if you buy it, I guess he puts all the track listings in there. Theres probably 10-15 beats that are really cool but I have never heard so I want to make the purchase. At first I thought 801 records would be overkill but as you guys said he does some clever dj work and gets them all in there.

Yeah, you guys know what you're talking about. I agree: the shit that passes for hip-hop these days is more like gangsta new jack swing...
i'm down with tribe called quest, public enemy, hieroglyphics, nas, wu-tang... i'm from the west coast but i don't take sides (i'm not a big fan of BIG or tupac anyway). i think that southern rap is killing the genre though... except for outkast and a few others they never had any good stuff anyway

I like the gangsta rap for the hard deep bass lines and the mean sounding tunes

I don't care too much for anything recent, although I have been caught a few times listening to Kanye. I think the first rap video I saw was Grandmaster Flash "time" i think, back in a day when my life revolved around Ratt and Motley Crue, it was a bit of an eye opener.

Ahh the old skool hip hop, used to love hip hop until it became about women, guns, and bling....My more appreciated old skool....A tribe called quest, fu-schnickens, funkdoobiest, slick rick, ....P.E. Good link......Redman is all the hip hop I listen to now, and the older stuff of course

Ah man, you guys should continue digging; there is good stuff being put out, but don't expect to hear it on the radio...

People Under the Stairs have a vibe quite similar to A Tribe Called Quest with much better production values, I've been digging them alot lately.

Diverse is a talented MC who can weave some deep and intelligent rhymes, so is Aesop Rock.

Binary Star was a short lived group that put out quite possibly the most amazing album I've heard called Masters of the Universe. It should be in every head's collection. I've had it for about 8 years now, and it still surprises the fuck out of me every time I give it a spin.

Little Brother is a top-notch group that features two talented MC's from North Carolina. They pick up where Pete Rock, Gangstarr, and the like left off.

You should also check out Hieroglyphics (which features Del tha Funky Homosapien), their sound is always fresh and lyrics are always tight; great music from L.A.

Anything that involved J Dilla aka Jay Dee (RIP) or Madlib or his alias Quasimoto demands every real hip-hop head's attention. His little brother, Oh No is similar stylistically, and is worth a listen, too.

Talib Kweli's older records (Train of Thought and Quality) stand out as hip-hop milestones, but lately he's put out nothing but garbage.

Also worth a listen is Prefuse 73, not traditional hip-hop by any means, but amazing none the less...

Always keep your ears open for the good shit.

Thanks for the input yall, especially everybody who related hip hop to their own life. I am not as young as dr. dog to have heard grand master flash but that would have been awsome. I think I heard some hammer lol.

I kind of like those off-tempo madlib beats these days, but you won't hear that on the radio I bet, but I don't listen to no radio ho's.

Yeah, I like Madlib a lot, but I wouldn't call him hip-hop... he's more in with DJ Cam and DJ Shadow. yes, panopticist- props for mentioning people under the stairs. I'm a big fan and seems like nobody's heard of them; they definitely have super-tight production i just think their flows get a little old sometimes (too much about kicking back with a blunt and 40's!). hieroglyphics is pretty much a sub-genre of perfection in itself- the whole crew, not to mention opio, del, souls of mischief, plus associated projects like deltron...
