Free A/C and Duhimid...

Hi,

My oil burners water heater ( on-demand coil ) clogged and crapped out.

I replaced it with an electric hybrid water heater.

The efficiency looks great according to the EPA yellow sticker. Says hot water should cost me $150/year.

Because it is electric, I was able to install it ( myself) much closer to demand. So, we only wait 15 seconds for hot water instead of >a minute.

My electric utility likes them. They rebate 50% of the cost. $500 rebate. I bought the thing at homedepot.

But, one of the coolest things is two byproducts are free cold air and dehumidification. I stuck it in my future veg room. Temp is down 4-5 degrees F. :dance013:

50% of the cost? wtf do you live in finland or something?

id buy a heat pump water heater in 15 seconds if my utility would pay fucking half... god damn.

yea heat pump water heaters are the shit, especially in cooling climates where you have many more hot days than cold...

like here in houston you would put them inside a hot garage... that way the delta is enormous and the COP is fairly high.
preferably you would duct the colder air inside, but not all of the heat pump water heaters have the optional cowls for ducting.

the heat pump btuh is tiny though... like 9kbtuh on the medium to large ones, so its not like you are wasting shit loads of cool air anyway. and when the garage gets to like 120 degrees like mine does, the evaporator air temp wont be much cooler than the indoor air anyway.

in a heating climate they are still good, just not amazing good. in a heating climate you need to put them indoors for decent functioning where the evaporator is barfing more cold air into your heated house.

queequeg152, you know a lot about heat pump stuff.
Reading through the reviews on homedepot website, it looks like many utilities are giving large rebates. I'm in the northeast.
This Rheem unit does have duct collars so you can duct that air in and out.
After rebate, the unit is $500.
Plus a few hundred for plumbing and electrical materials for install.

This is all great stuff for me.I am currently living with my 86 year old mamasita until she passes and having my little casa almost totally redone.I have been living with oversized window kickers especially in the flower room 15000 BTU for an 8 by 8 room.I found a brand that bottoms out at 60 degrees instead of the common 65F which really made a difference in my situation. This heat pump jazz just didn't occur to me,it may be exactly what I need. Thanks Stond Face you really gave me something different to consider.

ive never heard of a rebate that large for a water heater... ill have to look into that.

ive heard the ruud heat pump water heater is very good... insulation almost like the marathon tank but a bit thinner.

is the rheem just a rebadge rebrand of the ruud models?

this is the case with their air conditioning equipment... but idk if its the same with the water heaters?

Hi queequeg152

I don't know if my Rheem unit is a rebadged Ruud. I respect both companies, so I'm cool either way.

The rebates here are 50% of the water heater cost up to $750. Mine cost $999. So... I get half back.

god i wish they would just strap a heat pump onto one of the marathon ultra insulated tanks... the marathon tanks are just spectacular.

yea i know you can get split heat pump units... but come on. im not about to drop 1k on a split heat pump then another grand on a tank, then another 500 fucking bucks on a recirc system & a shit load of copper fittings and timers etc.
