yeah u can "sometimes" manipulate a female to go hermie.
but that depends on the specific strains "stability"
a good rule of thumb is that it wont work if u want it too.
I've tried a zillion times to "coax" a male floer from my MTF clones (there are no true-breeding males left, and this would only produce s1's or who knows what if i was able to cross the pollen to another strain)..but It has never worked no matter what...I've purposely rootbound them, and screwed w/ thier light cycle beyond belief...I left the outside in cold at night...tons of shit to stress them, but they NEVER showed a male flower.
oh well....you'll probably get them when you DONT want the though.
sounds like voodoo...maybe what your saying has worked, but I'm no expert.
even if it does work we are still only looking at a "forced/coaxed male flower" which is only viable for s1's and willy-nilly crosses....not a "true breeding male".
I've only heard of it being used to make floral arrangements and cut flowers last longer before wilting. Do you have any pics or first hand experience/ experiments?
hey yukon... by the sound of your efforts ya've got some real stable females there... that's a great sign of a perfect candidate for selfing/crossing as the children will be a bit more stable and not as prone to herm as if they were from a regular herm parent. give it flowering, then start giving 1-2hr of light in the middle of the night, then extend the day period an extra 2 hours keepin the mid-night light... outta get ya some male flowers... good luck man, would be GREAT ta see the matanuska available for some of us not in alaska
STS is the chemical way to go, and produces the most stable offspring... difficult to get, difficult to use, but great results... proven many times...
Many hydro stores are selling CL-ONE a sex reversal spray that contains sts as its main active ingredient. Sts works based on science, to understand how it works study up on plant hormones.
I understand how it works I was just curious about how effective it is and whether it caused sex reversal or intersexed plants and how consistent it's effects are. Sorry if I somehow offended you.
STS:Here's how it works: the sex chromosomes do not actually code for male and female organs. Rather, they send hormonal signals to the genes that control sex organ differentiation and slightly change the way that they develop. The observed effect, or phenotype, is obvious but the chemistry is quite subtle.
In the case of female flowers is is the plant hormone ethylene that tells flowers to grow in the female fashion. If your plant responds to stress by producing less ethylene, it will hermie easily. Vigorous plants have enough excess ethylene production that they can shrug off a bit of water, heat, or light stress and still produce enough hormone to maintain the female habit.
However, no plant can resist an application of silver thiosulfate as the silver ion strongly binds the ethylene and makes it impossible for the ethylene to transmit its feminine message from the sex chromosomes to the flowers. GA works the same way but as it is an endogenous hormone it has many other effects, some of which are undesirable. I strongly suspect that eXe relies on the same essential mechanism, locking up ethylene, but I imagine that it is carefully blended to avoid side effects.
I stole this info from another site but I hope it clears up the STS question and gives a better insight into how the stuff works... peace...
The myth in my part of America is that if you dissolve Asperin in water (no idea how much), and then sprayed it on a branch it would make it go hermie.......
I personaly would never want to do that unless I were breeding a hemp strain for Seed or oil production....... ( I guess female seeds, but I just personally am not a fan of strait female seeds (because I always want to create more)) But to each his own.....
Thanks hidehoshi. I thought I would've known about it if it was a hormone. So it is a nonendogenous chemical that inhibits ethylene biosynthesis and thus inhibits the biosynthesis of hormones created from ethylene evolution.
I am more interested in anecdotal reports. Does it cause complete and permanent sex reversal or does it caus plants to be intersexed for a period the returns to normal? And how much pollen will an sts sprayed plant produce compared to a male of the same size?
sorry Zam, I cant help you with the Q's concerning STS's duration of sex reversal or whether the forced flowers will produce as much pollen as a male. I can tell you however that I have seen a plant treated with STS and I would'nt have known it wasnt male if I hadnt been told. From what I know the STS is used before flowering is initiated and the entire plant will show male characteristics. I hope this has been of some help.
Hideyoshi that's as much info as I needed to know that it's worth giving it a try. Something that is capable of being this effective can eliminate much of the guesswork in selecting a pollen donor in the f2-f4 generations. I was thinking after producing an f5 using only females for breeding I can backcross to proven males of the f1 or f2 generation with a very stable well selected f5 female that every female flowering trait was known in it's pedigree. Having a good method for producing female pollen could eliminate so much of the testing required to determine that female flower genes in a male parent.
Actually, I never thought of it in those terms, not that I have ever had a need to, but your onto something definitely. If selecting for flowering traits, a reversed female could save you heaps of time in testing males for desirable traits in their offspring, in theory anyway. Please, if you do end up using this method as stated above in any of your own work, I would be very interested in seeing the results so please, pm if the time comes. I'm not brown nosing but after reading some of your posts I've come to the conclusion you really know your shit so once again, update me if you do test using STS in any of your projects... Hide...
