i think it goes without saying that having clean filters on the indoor unit is paramount. as they get clogged the cooling capacity of the unit is drastically reduced. for this same reason we change out the filters in our home central AC units. now, what to do if you notice a decrease in cooling as compared to the unit when it was brand new yet it still has clean filters????
look into the unit where the air blows out from the bottom. there is a long squirrel cage type blower fan that blows out the cool air into the room. if there is even a small amount of dust/mold/gunk on the fan the unit will not be able to cool properly. this can happen without any noticeable dirt in the filters. clean this fan and you will be much happier. i lost 10 degrees of cooling due to crud on my fan!
keep it clean, green, and stay safe.
