For lovers of Math and Liqour, the RumHam Dilemma

Derived from when the gang visited the Jersey Shore on "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia".

If I soak a ham in 40proof alcohol for 1 hour, how much alcohol will I consume per normal 6oz serving of ham eaten?

Solved: A Country Ham with the minimum removed water content of 18%, in an ideal situation where liquid replacement is total, barring extra absorption from unknown sodium levels, a 6oz serving of Ham will have a minimum of 1.06 ozs by weight of "Rum" or another similar spirit. Typically 1 fluid oz of a water-type liquid will weigh 1 standard oz, so we can infer that the fluid serving attained will be equivalent to 1 30ml shot.

country ham or hydrated?

country ham has to be soaked and absorbs a lot of liquid so it would soak up some rum!

This ham?

Not sure how much rum he can absorb in an hour, but you will certainly be crossing the line of one our more serious taboos if ya slice him up for a sandwhich

This is an excellent point!

From now on, for the purposes of this argument, we will be referring to a cured but unsmoked country ham.

Also, the ham is precooked, so evaporation is not a problem.

ok well in that case, just measure the rum before soaking, then measure what is left after you take the ham out, that gives you the rum in ham, then divide by the amount eaten.

Let's say we use a country ham in which the minimum of 18% of the ham's moisture weight has been removed, given an ideal situation in which we are able to replace all of that weight with Rum, this would mean a 6oz portion would be a minimum of 18% Rum (barring any extra absorption brought on by sodium content), giving us a serving of 1.08 ozs of 40proof alcohol per 6oz serving of ham.

Barring actual experimentation, these numbers seem plausible.

Thoughts?

You have too much time on your hands?

LOL

Nice thread though. :)

So is this just theoretical or have you gotten drunk on ham? Sounds funny
Workin on it, giving consideration to the quality of rum vs the palatability of the final consumable, balancing cost of good tasting rum against the fact that i'm not drinking it.

Goslings dark rum will work perfect for your trials. Rum ham with rum cake and bananas foster sounds like you'll b drunk for sure. I'm a big rum fan, goslings is the best moderately priced rum you'll find, usually only $1-2 more than Bacardi.

Wise advice.
Best to avoid those awkward morning moments when you promise you'll call them later.
Thats why you always let the pigs have the alcohol, then you avoid the conversation by sneaking out early.
