For everybody who uses a window unit

G

Guest 18340

These questions are for the folks who use a window unit thats not in a window.
Is it working for you?
What type of "box" do you have attached to the back of it? Any pics?
Does it ever shut off? Or is it running all the time?
What brand unit is it?
How are you venting the back of it?
Any tips you can offer a guy thats gonna build a box for his window ac?
I just got my tax rebate check and i'm gonna build a Flower room that will be in my garage. You know, a room within a room. Any suggestions would be appreciated greatly.
Thanks, Evl...

i run a very small unit in a closet hooked to a green air ct dh3, it exhausts into another closet which vents out into a large building, your main problem is where to vent yours, how bout an underground duct with small holes every so often to disperse the heat?

A friend of mine had one in his grow room and it worked great for him. He had it in an apartment and couldn't put it in the window as the land lord wouldn't allow them for the reason that they make the apartment look trashy. Kind of a stupid rule, but thats the reason he was given. So he set it up on a home made table and made a vent out of B&W polly out the back to expell the hot air out the window. Then he placed a drip bucket underneith. It worked really well for him for over a couple years, but unfortunately I don't know the details how he did it as it was about ten years ago and he is not among the living anymore. But I am sure with a little brain power you can make it work very well - I don't think it should be a problem. Just go bigger than you think you need and you should be fine.

Thanks guys.
I'll be running a 5k btu in a 4x6x8 room, 192 sq, ft. I'll either be using 1 600 watter in a cooltube on a light mover or a 600 w and a 400 w.
I plan on building a box areound the back of the ac, where the cooling fins are (not around the sides that have slots for the fan tha sucks air in the sides)and vent it up in the attic.
My main concern is whether or not i can get the ac to shut off every now and then or if it'll constantly be running.
I know there are a few folks running an a window unit indoors, just wondering how the're gettin by with their setup.

I have a few questions myself.

Do you need a dehumidifier for an enclosed room with a window a/c? If not, where does all the condensation go? Which brands are known to be sealed units? (Many people are reporting their window a/c units suck air from the front) How many peak amps does a 5k btu unit pull?

buy a green air ct-dh3 or something similar, dont get the one with the external coil, its a 2 degree differential, get the enclosed coil, its 7 degree diff, my ac kicks on at 83 and off when it gets down to 76, or look for an ac with a built in one

I also have a room built in my garage. It is incredibly hot here in the desert and I have 2 a/c units built into my room. They are recirculating units and the heat goes into my garage. I have an opening at the top of the garage that goes into the attic of the house. In that opening, i have an attic vent fan(1620cfm) that sucks the hot air out of the garage and pushes it into the attic and out through the vents. I have buckets under the a/c units to collect water, but with 20% humidity in this area, I don't get much,if at all. These units keep my room between 76 and 84 degrees, but run all the time. Therefore,in the summer, I have to run fewer lights to offset the electricity cost. My electric bill still looks like the GDP of a 3rd world nation.

pseudo krypto, Too late man, i already bought a C.A.P Tempstat controller. It has an external coil with a "probe" on the end of it. I'm hoping i can control the temps enough to get the ac to go off once in awhile, electricity is getting expensive. May i ask how you're venting the back of it?
Pops, i'm gonna have mine venting into the attic, but i'm planning on building a "box" around the back of the ac and runiing a 6" tube into a hole cut in the ceiling, and having a fan (in the attic, for stealth) sucking the hot air off the back of it.
I'm in Florida, so you can imagine the summer heat. I'm gonna try my best to pull this off...

i run an 8000 btu one with a 6 inch vortec ....both connected to a ct dh 1

Make sure to have plenty of room around the ac in the box for airflow

I like your box, looks great. I'm installing my 18kbtu window unit this weekend and was wondering if I'd need to build a similar box or not to vent the AC. My sealed room (12'x8', 4x1000w) is at one end of the three car garage (so theres some empty space). Could I just open the windows in there/crack one garage door to cool? How bad do you figure it'd get in there with outside temps in the 80's? Thanks

shit you not on the 600cfm+
that axial is 666cfm or so. so it works well.

for large units 15kbt + i sugest making the back of the box igger, maybe a foot and a half atleast.... there fans are more powerful and they need room to circulate the air.

you can leave the gdoor cracked but thats suspiciouse with a roominside, not safe imo. if u have a door from the g- to the side of the house then u can just screw up a 4x8 and make a hold for the a/c unit....right in the door frame.

I have a similar setup, but I built my box to more or less "butt up" to the back of the AC unit. I made a 6 inch hole at the top and bolted down an exhaust fan to it. The exhaust fan pulls the heat from the back of the unit. From the fan, I have a 6 inch flexible hose that vents outside. Pics are available if this sounds too confusing.

When cooling the back of the box, do you just have an exaust vent or do you need an intake also? It would seem to me it would be hard to match the inlines power with the exact amount of air coming out the back of the AC. If its too strong won't it pull stinky air through the front and out the back? Thats why it seems logical to have an intake and out-take at the back of the box - or is this the way you have them set up? Sorry for the questions, I am a little confused on how you guys did it. I need to make one soon and would rather learn from your experience instead of doing it myself. I could see many hours of wasted time fly by quickly. Thanks in advance!
