Foliar Feeding

FOLIAR FEEDING -
Foliar feeding, using bio based, natural organic foliar fertilizer, is an effective method for correcting soil deficiencies and overcoming the soil’s inability to transfer nutrients to the plant. Tests have shown that up to 90 percent of a foliar fed nutrient solution can be found in the smallest root of a plant within 60 minutes of application. A project conducted at Michigan State University, using radio*active tagged nutrients, proved that foliar feeding can be 8 to10 times more effective than soil feeding.

The effectiveness of bio based foliar applied nutrients is determined by (1) The condition of the leaf surface, in particular the waxy cuticle. The cuticle is only partially permeable to water and dissolved nutrients and, as a result, it can limit nutrient uptake. (2) The length of time the nutrient remains dissolved in the solution on the leaf's surface. (3) diffusion, the movement of elements from a high concentration to a low concentration. For diffusion to occur, the nutrient must dissolve. and (4) The type of formulation. Water-soluble formulations generally work better for foliar applications as they are more easily absorbed when compared to insoluble solutions. Water insoluble formulations are generally slow acting because they must dissolve before they can be absorbed and are more applicable for soil applications.

TIMING

The best time to foliar feed is late evening to early morning. These are the times when the stomata (the small opening on the leaves) are open.

Avoid foliar spraying when –
za_arrow.gif
When the temperature above 80F.
za_arrow.gif
When the weather is hot and dry and water vapor is leaving the cells.

Foliar spray –
When the temperature is 72F or below.
za_arrow.gif
Early in the morning when the cells of the leaf are full of water and dew has collected on the foliage.
za_arrow.gif
When air temperatures and humidity both equal 135 or less.
za_arrow.gif
When air temperature is cooler than soil surface temperature.

NOTE: A biological surfactant can reduce water tension and improve the absorption rate of bio based foliar sprays.

Where possible, the pH of a foliar spray should be between 6.2 to 7.0. To promote young plant growth a sweeter (alkaline) solution (pH 7.0) is recommended. For established growth, a more sour (acid) solution (pH 6.2) is recommended.
An effective foliar application can produce results in 1 to 6 days. Use a refractometer to detect results.

NOTE:
Ensure fertilizer is thoroughly mixed in water - apply in a fine mist - avoid drenching. No special equipment is required - Foliar solutions can be applied with the aid of conventional spray equipment i.e. fan sprayer, back pack sprayer, hi-boy, low or high volume ground sprayer, aerial sprayer etc.

thanks for that Joe! I feed kelp/molasses this way and extra potash/phosphate at flowering. also is easier to carry a sprayer to one's remote guerrila garden than a twenty litre drum of fert!

just be careful while spraying in flowering....remember we smoke the buds and what gets sprayed on them...

I never foliar feed my plants but I wanted to start. What kelp products can you recommend? Or is there something better? I grow using a modified lucas formula in pro-mix. I read you can use the GH nutes to make a foliar spray but I would rather use something like kelp. Any suggestions would be helpful, I know very little on the subject. Thanks

once per week during veg I spray kelp/water @ 1:100 added to molasses/water @ 15ml per 20 litres (that last is one Tablespoon per 5 US gals).

during flowering I use a propriety organic mix developed here in eastern Oz. can also use sulphate of potash dissolved in water and diluted. sorry no accurate dilution rates for this ... suck it and see.

cheers!

Stumbled on a rather informative foliar feeding pamphlet....
https://www.midwestlabs.com/images/stories/pdfs/soil_memos/foliar_nutrition.pdf

They recommend Nitrogen (perferably urea) be present in every foliar application, especially when applying micronutrients (3-8% N)....why, increased leaf-tissue permeability. Also....below is Table 5, (notice the rate which urea is absorbed).

Rates of Nutrients Absorption into Plant Tissue Nutrient Time for 50% Absorption
Nitrogen (as urea) 1/2 - 2 hours
Phosphorus 5 - 10 days
Potassium 10 - 24 hours
Calcium 1 - 2 days
Magnesium 2 - 5 hours
Sulfur 8 days
Zinc 1 - 2 days
Manganese 1 - 2 days
Iron 10 - 20 days
Molybdenum 10 - 20 days

I am buying some high quality urea today to add to my 100% organic fertilizer routine...or probably more like 98.9999% organic.
Cheers!

Awesome thread joe, can you recommend a good foliar feed? I have been using Magic Green and it works but I would like to utilize more nutrients and teas but I don't know what to use or the ratios for the teas.

Thanks,
Dawn

i have a compost tea thread in my sig with recipes and there is other threads in the organic section

foliar feeding should be at a very low ppm like 250pp,(0.5 EC)....foliar feeding at 2.5-3 ec is def not recomended....as you say it MAY work for you, but defwould not recomend ANYONE foliar feed this high, let alone feed their plants that high
