Flower with metal halide?

Thinking about flowering with a 400w MH, its all I have right now.

What will be the disadvantages to this? Yield?

The disadvantage is pretty much your yield will be decreased. That is not to say it will be horrible, your buds just wont be as heavy as if you had a hps. You could help supplement with some inexpensive warm white floros, which will help you better mimic the harvest sun. Over-all it can and has been done many times, with perfectly acceptable results. Good luck!!

Yes yield will suffer some but not too much yet bud structure will be tighter and the fragrance/flavor/potency/high type complexity will improve. Best herb I ever grew was done under halides...and actually preferred for sat dominant strains...really brings out the best in em. Just do it and am sure you'll be happy with the results.

Strain dependant, any tiny loss in yield is balanced by higher quality. HPS sucks basically, it produces slightly more bud in some strains, because they grow more leaf, searching for enough light. Go for it!

Not sure what Haps is getting at with " HPS sucks basically" because it is proven that the spectrum that the HPS gives off is conducive to a flowering plant. Kind of like how a plant likes more Phosphorus and Less Nitrogen in the flowering stage... same thing with lighting. HPS gives off more red spectrum, mh gives off more blue.

I only veg with HPS... so I'm in the opposite boat as you. I believe your plants will stretch more than those with the correct spectrum. Your buds +may+ be more wispy and less tight but thats just a hypothesis.

Basically your yields +will+ suffer but for what exact reason and to what degree, we won't know.

forgive the + i'm baked.

Virtually all growers flower using HPS....unfortunately because I think using halides will provide better results...better in regards to quality and yes some loss in yield but if you're growing for your head then OMG kind of good. Halides bring out aspects of your plant you never knew existed under HPS.

I know...flowering with MH, more specifically warm halides but I have flowered with cools, simply rocks.

You're forgiven.

EDIT...just remember if you flower under halides there will be a greater need for N during flower. No don't dump N on all at once as it should already be built into your soil (pre amended) or hydro nute program. If you're a bottle feeder keep a bit of extra N going throughout except towards the end. Just saying expect greater N usage.

If you're curious about whether you can flower with it because it is all you have then the answer is yes, you can if it is all you have.

However, as others have suggested, Metal Halide (MH) is not the ideal lamp for flowering.

The lower half of the spectrum is what you are looking for when flowering:

MH lamps produce a very spiked spectrum only peaking in a small region of the "spectrum sweet spot:"

However, they do provide a wider range of the spectrum which provides complimentary light during flowering. This can be achieved using other lights, however.

HPS lamps on the other hand, produce a more wide array of strength in the spectrum within the range, making them more ideal for flowering:

Here's a look at the spectrum through a spectroscope:

The more intense red and yellow that you see is because of the atomic sodium used in the lamp.

Hope that helps!

You may want to veg a bit longer with a MH than you normally would with an HPS. This tends to make up for the HPS not being there to bulk up the buds.

You WILL have more potent smoke.

If you'd like to help out the plants a bit and put on a bit more weight you could look into some 42W CFL's to add the orange/red bloom lighting the HPS would give you.

All in all you're going to be well satisfied with the results from flowering with a MH. Especially since it's YOUR smoke. LOL
