Fish Emulsion?

I'm very new to organic growing and I was wondering...Could I use "Alaska Fish Emulsion" (5-1-1) for vegetative growth by itself, or would I need to add something else with it? Also, what would be a good organic choice for a flowering fertilizer?

It's doable...but u might lack a little on the K department. Maxicrop would be a good thing to get if you could. What is your setup? Are u using a potting mix...soiless mix?
If your using a potting mix that has some ferts already in it..u should be ok just to use the alaska fish emulsion. -Opt

I'm using that wal-mart brand soil - perfect mix or pro mix, I can't remember - I dunno if it has ferts in it already...

What about an organic flowering fert? Bat guano?

Bat quano teas would be a option. Even tho i haven't used it..i've heard great things about Pure blend products. And of course people rave on the Fox farm line. You wont need a flowering fert for a while..so look around at what u can find in your area. And if your using the Walmart potting mix, u'd pry want to cut some additional perlite into it.-Opt

Alaskan 5-1-1, will work fine, I use it, and an occasional dose of mollasses.
Alaskan Morebloom 0-10-10, works fine also, but sometimes I'll add a little Cal-Mag, for any deficiecies that might occur.

i tend to stay away from the alaskan ferts, as its owned by G. Bush Senior. I have heard some horror stories on how they make there fish emulsion. SO i normaly go down to my local Nursiery and pick some up. The bloom moore flowering ferts from alaska ferts, is not really organic and has lots of metals in it. Leaves a foul taste. Just FYI.

fish emulsion tends to encourage fungal infections in the soil.
it is made from fish scraps that are not suitable for human consumption, so it contains an unacceptable amount of mercury and other metals, as stated by SCF.

Fish is overloaded with mercury nowdays. Especialy the big ones, predators. The higher in the food chain the more mercury there is. Pollution is killing us.

Can fish emulsion be labeled organic and still contain measurable amounts of mercury?

I love to use fish emulsion! but I use it only outdoor in the growing stage!

I think the plants grows faster and healthier with it!

peace!

There are some fish emulsions out there that specifically state that they dont have metals in them, but I don't know if you can trust them or not.

interesting, I use nothing but emulsion and kelp pretty much in flowering. Seems to do a good job. I heard it can contain metal, didnt think it was that bad though. Almost makes me reconsider using it in the future..? I always do a flush and nothing but water the last few weeks anyway though.

i have nothing against FIsh emulsion, I just dont buy ALASKAN ferts, for they are known having High metals, But I believe strongly that It does give a fantastic flavor ( the grosser it smells the better your plants taste) but i only use it maybe 4 to 6 times per grow, if that, i usually get a high Nitrogen Mexican Bat guano mix it in my soil, and only use the fish emulsion after i transplant and flower, Once during the flowering seasion. THis limiting my use of it, But yet getting the Love from Fish Emulsion, Plants really do love this stuff!!!

dont leave it out for a week and use it LOL. Yuck!!! Bad enough when you mix it. If you grow in your bedroom closet, i dont suggest using it. IT STINKS!!!! But will go away in 2 days or so.

wow great link!! thanks for that. Lets you know exactly about whats in your ferts.

I use MASTER NURSERY FISH EMULSION 4-1-1 and we will compare to ALASKA FISH FERTILIZER 5-1-1 . As you can see the alaska ferts have 7 times more Cadmium, Cobalt 700 % more Arsenic :yoinks: Twice as much Mercury, and it has way more of Molybdenum, Nickel, Lead, 3 times as much Selenium , and zinc. So as you can see not all ferts are the same. and what I notice is that high metal count causes poor flavor, hience why chem ferts have a milder flavor. Makes me want pure water as well. Take a look around that link and look up your ferts, and others you may use if you used chemical, or salt based ferts. Notice that the numbers are higher for Salt based vrs. Organic. :joint:

PRODUCT: MASTER NURSERY FISH EMULSION 4-1-1

Arsenic 0.7
Cadmium <0.1
Cobalt <0.1
Mercury <0.05
Molybdenum <1
Nickel <0.1
Lead 1.2
Selenium 5.5
Zinc 14.8

ALASKA FISH FERTILIZER 5-1-1
Arsenic 7
Cadmium 0.7
Cobalt 0.7
Mercury 0.1
Molybdenum 0.7
Nickel 1.4
Lead 3.5
Selenium 14
Zinc 25
