First time Indoor Grow, Some questions

Hello all, Soon i'll be constructing a new grow room of about 3'x2'x4' tall. Ill be using a 400watt HPS lamp in it. For cooling I beleive i'll be using a cieling fan that bathrooms use(any other suggestions would be helpful) I want to be able to grow 4 plants also including some lowryders at some point,

My big question is what is the minimum size pot I need in order to grow a scrog style with having the screen at about 1.5 ft-2 ft? I've never used a HPS but from my experience I beleive it has to be about 12" away hence why the screen will be that low.

Any other suggestions would be great since i'm used to growing outdoors.

Let me also mention i'll have a small computerfan as an active intake and will be making a carbon filter comming out of the bathroom fan, again any suggestions will be greatly appreciated

Alright Mate ..i Have a see of green on the go at the minute 14 bigBud under 2x600hps and 2 whiteWidows For Mothers under 1x400hps.
the pots that i use in the I.G.S System are about 6inch in Diameter and about the same in depth..the pot size doest realy matter too much as you can change them at a later point , i was going to change mine to the 13liter pots but the grow is too far though for me to bother now

take a look at my grow it might give you some idea's. :joint:

If you are going scrog you will be vegging for a longer time then you would for sog, hence you should use as large of a container as you can , maybe one large tote for all? more roots=biggerbuds rite?

Not sure of the type of space you'll be using but this is my 430 in a closet 2'x3'x8'. I have the hood exhausted to a 240 cfm fan in the attic, I also have a fan at the base of the rack. I do not close the door. my house is centrally AC'd. It will be about 80 degress in that space with the light 18" off the tops. I can put 15 1 gal pots with my vegging clones in there. However, if I was to flower out a full plant, I put only 2 in 10 liter (2.5 gal) pots. If you scrog or sog I would recomend half the number of 1 gal pots and flwr when no taller than 8" in your 4' high space. The hood takes up 18" of height. Assuming you will be working from clones?

HPS usually needs to be about 2' above the plants, and it needs room above it. The safety instructions that came with my HPS light say to leave 2' above it.

With only 4' high, you might consider mounting the light on top of the cabinet instead of inside. Cut a hole the size of your reflector, mount a piece of glass inside the cab covering the hole (cuts down on heat) and put the light on top. This keeps much of the heat from the light out of your grow space; you can cover the light with a box (vented to the rear) if security is a problem.

Good venting is going to be necessary with a cab that small. 400 watt HPS will produce a lot of heat.

I assume you are growing in dirt; if so, I don't have the expertise to answer your questions about pot size. I prefer hydro.

I see a SCROG setup as follows:

pot height 6-8" (?)

distance between pot & screen approx 10" (leave enough room so you can reach under the screen to train the plants)

bud height above screen 12-18" depending on variety

That's as much as 3' tall already.

If you have room to use a taller cabinet, you might want to consider it.

i Agree..Room Size Is Very Importent ..and later on it will make you wish you had of made it bigger.
im now on my 3rd rebuid lol Wish i Had just done it right the first time HeHe.

Extraction is a Big thing too i have 2x600's , 1x9inch fan (Extraction) 2x5inch fans (intake) and a big room fan...and Climite Control And Still It Gets Godamn Too Warm Some Times...AirCon Next lol.

Best Of Luck M8

Regarding temps, I found, thru the process of error, it's best to consider as much air space as possible. Once an HID light is decided on I would recommend buying a good digital thermometer, set up your room sans plants and check the temps and humidity swings. If the light is on a mover then the temp just under the lamp isn't too big a concern if above 12-18" away and the hood is vented. More importantly in that case will be the temp in the area around your tables. This is the circulating air that the whole plant will be living in.
Whoop, I wonder if your intake and extraction are moving the same amount of air, if you push xx cfm in you have to extract the same amount. Meaure your volume of space (hxwxl i.e 12x 12x8=1152 cf) and you will know how many cubic feet of air is in the room at any one time. In this example I would need to move 1152 cf. How fast (per min.) is dependant on how much cooler the incoming air is. That is the amount you need to exchange at any one time. Moving it doesnt cool/dehumidify it. Too low a rate and the temp and humidity will build up and can never be cooled without cool air in from somewhere. I would also recommend 2 large ocillating fans at opposite ends of the grow room. Let them sweep across the tables. This is more important than just temp control. These plants can take a good range of temps provided you have a good circulating air flow. IMHO an attic is the worst evironment to set up a grow. Temp stabilzation doesnt exist in the summertime unless you have an ac intake and exhaust and a seperate thermostat from the house ac. Outside air being forced into the room can carry insects and other pest unless it is filtered for such. Whiteflies and thrips just love plants in warm, humid, low air flow circulation environments. Humidity buildup can be horrendous but the effect on the buds can be minimized with good circulation. And keep the circulators, intakes and exhaust on when the lights are off. Stale, humid air is poison. Dont worry about the smell outside, you're up above the street far enuf that no one would smell or be able to locate the source, until they listen for all the fans you need. LOL.
