first time grower !help!

i have just started my grow i have 3 skunk no1s 2 white widows AND an unknown strain that i got from a friend i have a 400 waTT hps without a ballast its connected to the mains is that ok i am just looking to know how long it takes these breeds to flower and how can i increase their yeilds

i waS ALSO THINKING OF MAKING A GROW ROOM OUT OF A old dog house that i hacew withit being hightened a little plz reply

please don't try to plug that in/turn it on.

run it through the ballast...better yet, get a new setup with a matching ballast. if this can't happen, get some Compact Flourescent bulbs (require no ballast)...

yeah i totally agree with sleepy...ur putting the whole house in jeopardy of a big electrical fire if u do that kind of thing...the ballasts are sold with the lights for a reason...save up a little dough and do it right; safety is no accident :wink:

your concerns should be in setting up a grow with working lights, you sound clueless, not that it's a bad thing, we all must start somewhere. buy a screw-in type edison base (standard/medium base for the ignorant) flourescent spiral bulb (CFL is what us pot farmers call them for short, CompactFLourescent) AND a table/desk lamp and root/veg your clones in that light, you dont need an hps yet and by the time they have roots/start growing you will have enough knowledge through reading to possibly build a FLOURESCENT hood, i do not and CAN NOT reccommend you use the HPS if you have so little electrical know-how, it's not a personal thing it's a saftey thing, using HID systems inside (and for gardening!) is not safe to begin with, they are meant to be used outside for good reason, start with compact flourescents, phillips makes a great screw in bulb that is SELF BALLASTED (all screw in CFL's are self ballasted) it is called an "envirolite" and you can buy this at most any hydro outfit..this plugs right into your "mains"

You can provide simple, affordable lights for your plants until they need something bigger, without risking serious problems. you know, i was just thinking, he could also just go to the hydro store and buy a hydrofarm 400 watt ballast/socket assembly kit and also a growlux lamp and it is pretty much fool-proof... make sure you plug this complete "grow-specific" High Intensity Discharge (whether you are using Metal halide HPS WHATEVER) lighting system into a GROUND FAULT CIRCUIT PROTECTED WALL RECEPTICLE!!!!! (GFCI) they are (the new us standard type madeby leviton) under 30 dollars, if you can find old stock somewhere they are much less, the national standard (code?) has just changed along with the price, you used to be able to convert to a gfi outlet for under 10 bucks, now ya gotta scout it out to save a buck

the lamp i was planing to use iss a 400 watt spot light which i conected to the mains and degsined with an electro magnet circuit breaker.i nver intended to use it yet i was just thinking of wat kind of system i vcould use but i will wait until i have enough to buyman air cooled son argro 400 watt wit BAlLAST and i was wondering if i would be worth trhe investment to use hydro for my plants and does any vof you guys know any good breeding faqs. thx!

buy a book or 3...READ THEM!

BOG's book would be a good start (KISS methods), Jorge Cervantes' Indoor Bible is complete & concise...as for breedeing...Greg Green's The Cannabis Grow Bible has a bit of breeding info...

read read READ!!!

we would rather you spend $$ on tried & true knowledge, instead of throwing away your $$ on "what should i try this week"

hi....i think what u mean is the security light doesnt have a REMOTE ballast...all the workings are inside the enclosure like a car park light???
does it look anything like this

if so it is a low bay....the other shape u get is a floodlight ....
If it is either of these then it will work as long as it is HPS or MH....but u wouldbe better off getting a proper grow light or converting it into one(only if ur competent and feel confident in doing so!!!) I have a thread at growroom designs and equipment foprum here that shows you how to do so....
ill second Sleepys advice on getting a good book, I can personally recommend "The Homegrowers Manual" by billy McCann, and "European cannabis cultivation"( just "cannabis culivation" in US/Canada) By Mel thomas, and for a detailed understanding of the cannabis plant itself, then a copy of MJ Botany by Robert connell Clark wont hurt...that one will cover basic breeding but I think ur a fair way off needing that yet if ur just starting out.....
The most important thing to remember is safety...u dont want to kill uself or ur family or ur neighbours just to grow some pot....make sure ur power is all safe and can cope with ur needs

harry im in northern ireland but eh naw its a security lite u can find in any electrical storeit came with a 400 watt hps and it came with wires to conect it to the mains and i got my friend whos an electrication to wire it up to a mains cord for me and its all done in a very high strandard.

Does anybody have any advice on anythingf it would be greatly appriectated i am planning to start my grow in about 4-5 weeks time i took your advice and have practiclty read all the overgrow faqs and have placed an order for the the cannibus grow bible.

Do you think a 430 son argo will be enough for 6-8 plants and wat do these floresents look like?i have heard they are only good for seedlings and clones.
how long do u think il have to veg them for. il be greatful for any advice nomatter how small or ilrelevent you may think it is il need it thx.STITCH
