First Grow

Hi everyone,

This is my first grow from germing a seed. I was able to see the paper towel method to germ the seed. It was successfully and then planted into soil. I think it was planted the wrong way so i dugged up the root and on the other side (buried in soil) looked liked two small leaves. So I turned it around and planted the root back in the soil. I'm really not sure if this is looking okay or if I really killed it by planting the wrong side into the soil.

Can anyone tell me if this looks okay or not?

Okay so OGK #2 just germed after 3 days. to make sure i'm doing this right, i plant the seed part into the soil with the sprout still out of the soil right? I'm just making sure as the last one seemed to have problems starting.
I've posted the pic of the germed seed. Can someone confirm for me?

beach, I'm pretty sure that's the tap root and you want that facing down, and everything gently covered for a bit. Like very little overtop, it will develop into it's root system. I'm still very new as well, so if someone corrects me, take their advice first ;)

next time keep it simple and put the seed 3 -4 mm under moist soil and let it do its thing ... i would progress onto the paper towel or glass of water technique when you have got a little more experience .. the white root should face down into the soil but be very gentle with it or it might break ;)

good luck beachbum1

yes i agree i think the easiest way is to just stick them into the soil after soaking for 12 hours and making sure the soil stays moist.

years ago the first time i tried to grow, i tried using the paper towel method but i guess i didn't do something right, in the end i just went and used a jiffy pot, had no problems getting them to sprout. This time around (10 years later and only 2nd try lol) i had no problems first time round sprouting using soil. Just seems pretty straightforward, throw seed in and keep soil moist :) good luck!

Thanks everyone.

Ok, OGK #1 is pretty much on it's limbs now. :-( .

OGK #2 has been seeded in soil yesterday and now day 4
It looks like the shell is still on there, do I need to remove the shell or will it fall off by itself?

Okay I have OGK #3 seed in the paper towels right now, so I'll drop that seed in the soil then.

Right now both OGK #1 and #2 are under the light 24hrs. I have bought a used waredrobe closet and will be painting it white and all the additional stuff.

That doesn't look too bad for me. They sometimes look strange as they're popping out of the soil and extending their cotyledons. Just give them time. They're weeds, after all. Their resilience will surprise you!

Hi everyone,

So OGK #1 did make it and is looking well so far.

OGK #2 is also doing very well :)

But OGK #3 was doing well and now for some reason when i went to check tonight it seems like the stem is breaking but the root is still in the soil. What's happening???

A couple of questions:

1. What should I do? Cut just below the broken stem or will that make it worse? Is there even a chance of reviving it?

2. Currently I have only one light over three plants, is that enough or do i need to add one more?

3. Currently they are in the storage room so I haven't place a fan in there as the air seems to be moving quite well or do i need a fan in there.

4. At what point do i need to give the plants nutrients and I guess how much.

Thanks everyone.

Not an expert, but I'd bring them closer to the light... They look more light stretched than I would want my plants.

What kind of light setup are you using?

sorry, here's what OGK #3 looks like:

Stick a toothpick in the dirt next to the stem and put something around to hold her/him up.And then........................................................................................................................................................LEAVE THEM ALONE!!!!

grats on your 1st grow!
1st i'll try and answer your questions;

FlaDankster answered your 1st question, prop that seedling up with something. this is probably caused by your light not being strong/close to the plants.

your 2nd question depends on what kind of light you are using. im assuming that you are using a CFL in this storage room. if thats the case you need to keep that bulb really close to your plants, ~10cm/3-4in or so for max light intensity. any further and you will cause the plants to strech. also what light are you planing on flowering with?

air circulation is very importaint, so you will need some sort of fan/vent system. take a look at your plants in the morning, if there is dew on the leaves then your air circulation is very poor and you can create a mold problem if not fixed

without listing your soil mix nute content, its hard to say when to start feeding. but i would think around 2-3weeks or so and the growth might start to slow and you might start to see the plant yellow a bit. thats your queue to get them on some food.

now some tips;

i agree, your soil looks a lil wet, cut back on your watering a bit. i would lean on the side of underwatering rather than overwatering. a good way to tell when to water is to get two cups of your soil mix. throughly soak one of them. now notice there weight, you should be watering when the weight is just under the half-way between the two test pots. also i would add a lil bit more pearlite to your mix. that will help prevent overwatering and also allow more air into the mix which helps the roots grow.
not sure if you did this or not, but the biggest mistake noobs make is to try and build there grow room around there growing plants. always build your growroom 1st, do a week long dry run to make sure your temps, RH%, air flow, waterpumps (if hydro) are all working for you. this will prevent the basic environmental mistakes from happening, as well as giving you a baseline of what your system should look like.
do a lil research on what nute lineup you are gunna run. most will give good results, but make sure that whatever you deside on using is a complete nutrient system. the cheaper nutes and the 'general purpose' stuff normally is missing a few trace elements that is assumed will be gotten from the soil or water. even if the cheap stuff has all the trace elements they may not have the right propotions causing nute lockout issues. remember, garbage in is garbage out.
lastly, like what a lot of other ppl have said, leave them alone and let them do there thing. they are, after all just a weed and will grow even in horrible conditions.

good luck to you
HA
