I obtained a seed a couple of months ago dont know what strain but it sure was a good smoke , bought an heated propigator and some cactus soil hey presto 1 week later up she / he popped 25 days ago. Panic set in what do I do know . Since then I have read a bit about growing methods and so forth and now have a little know how , seems to be growing ok even if a little week its had some miracle grow soil ph is 7.0 water is 7-7.5 gets 20 hours of light halogen bulbs (have just got hold of some sodium bulbs so I am going to set those up next ) so now im just watching it reach for the stars (and a little bit chuffed ive managed to get it this big .

First Grow Unknown Seed

Sooner you get some "real" light on that plant the better. It's gonna do some serious stretching when you go to flower. Regular light bulbs are not going to give you any decent bud. You also need some good ferts.

There's plenty of info here in the forums. Look in the growers forum and read or if you want specific info use the search feature. The more you read the less questions you'll have to ask. Not that this is not a place to ask questions. There's plenty of people here willing to tutor the new grower but they help those that help themselves.

Some questions I asked myself before I dropped my first seed were:

1. What's my purpose?, i.e, do I want to hobby grow for myself and my close friends or do I want to turn a couple of pounds to a co-op or to patients every month or so?
(I personally don't believe in growing tons of stuff as everyone should be able to and should be expected to grow their own if able. Just like making your own wine or home brew.)

2. What's my budget? (It can get expensive but doesn't have to be.)

3. Do I grow in soil, soil less or hydro/aeroponics?

4. Do I grow organically or use chemical ferts.

5. What grow style do I want to use?, i.e., SoG, ScroG, Tree Grow, Super Crop, etc.

6. Do I have a secure location?

Again, check the threads in the forums section and use the buzz words in the questions above in the search feature. If you read the knowledge will come and all you'll have to do is put it into practice. Through trial and error and some mentoring within this community you can become a master grower! Good luck!

halogen bulbs
:nono: With halogen bulbs, the plants think they are being shaded by surrounding trees/shrubs in nature. This type of light is called far red. It makes plants grow abnormally tall and leggy.

Get some florescent bulbs. I suggest 40 watts per square foot. The bulbs should be just an inch or two away from the tops.

Ph is high. Try to get it lower toward 6. Once you mix the fert water, adjust ph down to this. You can use vinegar as a cheap substitute for ph down.

There is no calcium, magnesium, or sulfur in miracle grow. If no dolomite lime in your cactus mix, add cal mag in your water every time along with the mg plant food . With dol. lime, add cal mag every third time or so. 1/4 teaspoon powdered gypsum and 1/4 teaspoon epsom salts per gallon of water along with the regular fert provides your cal mag and some sulfur. Calcium chloride in bottles under the name tomatoe blossom end rot stopper or something can be used instead of the gypsum if you can't find that. Get net weight on the bottle and % calcium and we can come up with a rate. Calcium nitrate can also be a substitute at 1/4 teaspoon a gal.

With 15-30-15 mg plant food, use about 3/4 teaspoon per gal of water. (about 140 ppm nitrogen) Do this everytime you water till it flows from the bottom of the container.

Here comes the hard part. Since your plant is so leggy (stretched too much), cut the top off of it. Snip at the red line in the picture. It will become more bushy.

Be careful not to overwater while the plant is recovering from surgery. It has fewer leaves loosing water.

Good luck!

Ok he is growing with a halogen bulb and your suggesting to him to top his plant? If any thing he should use LST.

Right on Blackvelvet! Good info. I didn't want to overload him with info and didn't have time to write a very long reply. Thanks for the back up.

I did forget to mention topping the plant and he should try to root the cutting as well. If it turns out to be a famale then he'll have two and it's always nice to have extra in case one gets sick or he wants to sex the plant early.

Hopefully HazeToker this newbie will get his act together and put some better light on the situation. Either way he'll learn as we all have through trial and error and with stick-to-itiveness he'll become a happy grower.

This plant looks like a male. I have no reason to say that. Still looks like a male.

New Lighting

Thanks for the comments but I didnt want to take such drastic agtion then find out it was a male and a waster of time . It is my first grow and the timming and set up was not the best but I havnt killed it (yet). Two days after I first posed I set up a little grow room with air intake/out take 250watt sodium bulb , found a hydro shop 2 miles from where I live and sought out the advice from a nice fella who runs it , purchased bio bloom feed , moisture gauge soil ph tester and so on and so forth .

A further two/three days later I saw a vast change darker leaves thicker growth and more of it . Yes i am a newbie and have a lot of reading to do but I dont mind that one bit , this is turning into a good hobby even if its annoying the wife a little. Even started a new seed off that seems fine hope that the new addition will be better than the first one.

once again thanks

p.s just found out what happens when u over water it the leaves curl under a little bit.

123 - I wasn't trying to insult you by calling you a newbie. No offence I hope. I'm still a newb in my on right.

Tomato plant food would be a good option for you for feeding, and you need to control your PH, get it down to around 6.5, it's an optimum level for all nutrients to be absorbed. Significantly higher, or significantly lower can & will lock out absorbtion of needed nutrients. You can slowly lower the PH using fish tank PH Down, the same stuff you can get at a pet supply store.

Otherwise, it seems to be doing pretty good. You just need to get that PH under control before it turns into a major problem.
