First grow, 400w!

This is my first attempt at a grow so hopefully i dont screw it up too bad.

First off materials.

400w galaxy digital ballast, thing doesnt get that hot at all really, i love it so far, no rf problems with cable, phone or wireless.

sunmaster econocool 6in duct, not sold on this yet, i cant keep the light cool b/c my fan is horrid and not hooked up.

ecoplus fan 4in (pos need a quieter fan) any suggestions?
just using some panda poly stuff ghetto rigged until i figure out something permanent that i like.

soil, fox farms ocean forest, with 30% perlite, and some dolomite lime.

I had 4 seeds from some bagseed to have a test run.

i used paper towel method and 3 of 4 sprouted, not bad i thought. I put one into soil with only a short 1/4 root, the other 2 i let get a long 1 inch root going before soil time.

Here is where i made my first mistake, i hung my 400w light 5 feet above the plants and got this.

so i went and put them all under a 4ft flouro tube for the next week, the seemed to be doing ok, but plant 1, that sprouted first, has been having problems with twisting leaves and what not. also looked like the flouros singed the edge?

above and below are pics of the leaves that are the most twisted and bentall wierd now back under the 400w, what do you think? heat? it has got up to 85 a couple times, but now its about 75-78 lights. I need to make a tent outside this closet.

heres all three now after thier first day back under the hps.

and that brings us to today, the plant 1 with its twisted leaves was pissing me off, so i snipped a couple leaves purely for learning experience on how the plant will react. the other 2 are doing very well. They both look very indica to me, these two have a couple leave curls on them but not very much, im worried that the low humidity is also hurting them, it never goes above 30% since i took the bags off the top.

So what do you think for a new fan? I might have to go to wally world and get a humidifier for veg it seems. Also, Ive only water them ever 2-3 days and only until the first drop comes out the bottom. My water is ph of around 8, been taking it down to 6.0-7.0 before watering. The bulb im using is a solarmax.

That damage is not from floros if you are using tube floros, mine grow into the tube often with no harm done. You should keep the seedlings no more than 1/4 inch above the tops until 4 or 5 inches, then move to the HID

idd, please veg your plants under floro lights, they like them WAY more than hps at this stage.

I guess the reason why i dont want want to put them back under the floros is that they barely grew at all, while now they seem to be growing so fast i can notice a change everyday.

I know for a fact the floro did something to one plant, unless the light had nothing to do with the plant leaf burning back into it self like when you put a flame close enough to plastic. The leaf looks like it burnt back on itself and it also just ripped on one side under the floro. floro=no luck! hah

well since everyone is against the solarmax hps, what about a plain MH bulb?

so i broke down and went insane and hooked my fan back up. The intake is pulling a 6 inch tube, into reflector, out to a 6in to 4in reducer, then to the 4in ecoplus fan. What a giant pos. I can hear the fan making just about every noise, EXCEPT the noise of moving air. I need complete stealth, and having a hair dryer sound come from my room 24/7 is NOT stealth, i guess i have to go get a vortex or something, because this is not going to work :(

The vortex fans are nice. The only noise you hear is air movement. If you get some insulated ducting you can cut out some of that noise. I've got one of the galaxy ballasts as well and love it. No noise, no heat, no problems. Keep up the good work.

ok, so i was trying to figure what temp reading to go off of.....and they are about 5 degrees off....

the "unit" came with a probe sensor and right now i have the sensor right next to the unit, when i switch to the probe temp reading it is always about 3-5 degrees cooler than the units readings...

is this because the unit is in direct light? because the probe is literally right on top of it and getting a different reading.

this probably sounds stupid, but is annoying the shit outa me right now because i cant finish up my ventilation setup unless i have an accurate temp to go off.

anybody?
