Fire affecting taste

I'm close to a huge wildfire, and I am concerned that the smoke will affect the taste of the flowers. anyone have experience or advice?

If the smoke is heavy and long lasting, I suppose it could effect the taste. If you are growing outdoors there is probably nothing you can do about it. Keep a bag packed in case you have to flee.

you don't *have* to leave, you cant be forced to evacuate in my state.

they wont arrest you, but it makes the firefighters jobs harder when people are still around.

Sorry bud. Got ash all over my garden, would imagine that'd be hard enough to shake off your crop let alone be without smoke flavor or smell on it. like some Lapsang Souchong, theres a market for the smoked stuff.

On the up side, next year the soil will be enriched by the ash and you might get a bumper crop. Pests and disease may also be considerably lower.

I've had plenty of close calls with fires, been evacuated from gardens, and smoked out for days on end (even at harvest time). I've never noticed any effect on the finished product. really you just need to look out for mold if the smoke is blocking the sun

I agree with Lurker.

Also want to add that it is totally possible to wash your stuff at harvest. Now I have no idea how many plants you got so it might be outta the question, but I have seen it done for this very reason. To remove the ash.

You just need several large trash cans or 55 gallon drums. Whatever you can come up with. Set up 3 cans, fill with water and do a three stage rinse. Chop your plants a little at a time, cut to the length that they will dry at. Dip down in the water and swish around gently, then the next two cans the same way. Might need to change your water after a while. Then hang to dry.

There are recepies on line for using baking soda and lemon (Doc Bud method) as the first rinse but thats up to you. I would just wanna get the ash off.

Agreed. Twice had fires come over the nearest ridge in Late sept and the bud was fine. Lite dep was finishing in heavy smoke for days and was harvested in smoke and it was undetectable.

Thx for the advice! Now I just have to get back in to see if they are still standing. Feeling very grateful that I am alive, got my little dog out, and am surrounded by loving friends.
