Finishing times, is 8 weeks complete BS always?

I've grown a number of plants, mostly from seed, but also from clone. The plant that I'm about to write about is from a clone that I popped as a seed last year (so, like 4th generation, no moms). The plants went in right after 4 weeks of veg 24/0.

Recently, I took a few plants down at roughy 8 weeks, and they dried into very little "dry plant matter".

I happened to leave one of those (Northern Lights) plants still under the lights, as I didn't think that it was "quite ready". Well, I had a stash, so I just let it keep going. We're at about 10.5 weeks from the flip now, and it's still going. It's bigger, frostier, and healthy can be. Not a yellow leaf on the thing, although I did big-leaf it today (it's still going, don't worry).

I routinely examine trichs and take at about 50%-75% cloudy, with maybe 5% amber. These are cloudy (at 10.5 weeks), but not nearly all going amber.

I'll get a photo up, but I am guessing that I could take it another week or two, easily. Would it be crazy to take NL to 12.5 weeks if it's alive and growing?

So, is 8 weeks basically "the time at which you will have some smokable product" and something like 10-12 is more like "yeah, now it's actually done, heavier, and with more trichs"? ...or am I totally wrong and have some genetic freak? They get Co2, H&G, and are in soil. Temps are a little higher lately at 79-81F.

Does anyone have a line graph of growth/week for cannabis? Are the largest gains just before the end, or closer to the middle?

Thanks for your feedback!

Seedmakers tend to give an estimate of their products, with the more indica-dominant genetics typically finishing the quickest.

I think 8 weeks is absolute optimum conditions, most indica dominant pheno, flipping after 6-8 weeks veg once plant is at full maturity and in the hands of a very experienced grower.

If you're still not showing amber trichs at 12 weeks then no harm in running till you do, assuming you've already flushed then I'd run till it either shows amber or the leaves fall off haha.

I run everything about 10 weeks from flip after about 5 weeks veg, even with the same strain (home grown inbred seeds though) some phenos are ready at 9 weeks and some could probably go 12-13. I find at 8 weeks the plant often looks ready, mostly orange hairs, cloudy trichs with a few amber ones showing; but all the yield seems to come in that extra last 2 weeks, flushed with water and molasses.

I used to run flood/drain hydro. With a lot of nutes, I literally had a freak plant finish (actually *done* for what that environment could provide) in 5.5 weeks. I couldn't believe it. I was taking down its neighbors at 9ish weeks. I guess I should have taken some clones of that lady.

I've had a plant that experienced 12c (~22f) fluctuations between night and day temp which was probably ready at 6 weeks when I realised and started to flush, by 8 weeks it was almost too far gone. Bedtime smoke.

only one breeder had a finishing time faster than advertised and that was working with sour bubble from bog..almost every other strain requires up to 2 more weeks for me..i think their finish times are for as soon as you can harvest something smokeable not truly ripe..IMHO...yeehaw and I have grown shitloads of strains

In all the plants I have gone thru I've only ever found one that actually finishes in 8 weeks. It's this one, some unknown clone I got a hold of, it would be an outdoor growers wet dream since it finishes so fast and has heavy resistance to mold. It's ready to be pulled in 58 days. IMO its the worlds perfect plant, it finishes fast, has 5 star bag appeal, it stinks, it tastes good, its got a little bit of color and it finishes faster then pretty much anything.

+2 weeks is definitely a good rule to follow, as far as potency goes a 14-18 week sativa always hits the spot better for me than an 8-10 week hybrid so I'm put off by super fast finish strains. One day I'll hopefully be able to grow 10 foot outdoor trees in peace.

Very good looking plant! looks just like a Romulan plant I grew out from seed yrs ago from Federation Seeds. I miss her!!! No one grows romulan anymore these days it seems... very sad... cant even find the seeds from my searches ,, only Next Generation is selling stock of it nowadays but I cant seem to find any in stock anywhere....

I have a few that finish early 8 weeks or less.
Green Crack,
Blue Ghani
Moroccan Hash Plant
C99
NL#5xC99

and some others.

But for the most part from all the breeders out there.. minus a few.. BOG is one of them... they make a week or 2 earlier claim as that is the earliest time they could be harvested but really its just marketing more or less... but the longer flowering time stuff most list is usually spot on. never bought a 10-12 week strain that took much longer than expected. Stating a strain takes 9 weeks when it takes 11-12 is just mean  cause thats one hell of a long time to wait for the fruits of your labor.

Most bud takes 8-10 weeks to ripen properly. Some longer ,, a few shorter. they are out there just need to find them!:peek:

I just harvested a blueberry snow (bodhi) that I took at 12 weeks with very few amber trichs. It was really finished looking at 10, but I was busy, so it went longer. Some strains don't amber up as much as others, ime. Ive grown a few BOG strains that finished pretty early, but showed no ambers at harvest. They were still stoney, but no ambers. In my experience most everything needs 10 weeks, but I've found a few phenos here and there that are finished in 8 weeks with nothing gained by taking them longer. However, they are very few and far between. I've probably popped a bunch of seeds(hybrids) and grown out hundreds of seed plants and probably 3-4 have been true 8 weekers with the majority being 10-11 week finishers.

Beautiful plant! There are some great replies here. I bought a seed stash recently, I have everything from 8-11 Weeks "claimed". One of the companies is Best Coast, and their little tagline is "Ain't nobody got time for 10 weeks". I'll be interested to see how those do, since they are really pushing the fast finish as a selling point (price is also pretty good).

I haven't even popped them yet, so I can't give any first-hand reports, but when I do, I'll probably take one around 8 and then let another wait it out for 10ish weeks and see what happens. Even if it just turns colors, it's kind of neat.
