I was round home depot the other day and noticed they only got fine grade vermiculate!! Almost like fine sugar or powder.
I was like whhooooaaa, can you actually use it?? I only used coarse verm myself so I don't know
In my humble opinion, unless you live in an extremely arid climate, vermiculite should be the last thing i would place in my mix. Simply put, it retains toooooooo much moisture and adds nothing to the aeration of the soil. There is both Vermiculite and Perlite in 3different versions
V1 fine
V2 medium
V3 normal
V1 is best have in the beginning if you veg
or make professional layers in big pot right away
V1 fine on top
V2 medium middle
V2 and V3 mix bottom
The roots get stronger after a time, they can handle V1 fine
in beginning best. After this when roots get stronger you want V2
V3 is not weeds best friend begin with.
I use V3 outside when i plant new roses and other plants with thick treelike roots.
Indoors V2 works ok
V1 is best , the fine if you veg in smaller pots before move to bigger
there you will have V2
If you do huge pots 4gallon + V3 is best in bottom
Have less vermiculite on top, more at end
Have more Perlite on top, less at bottom
Perlite dont bring water long time
Vemiculite holds more water in longer time.
You want less Vermiculite on top than perilite.
Also
You want more Vermiculite at botton than perlite
If you want go super professional.
use both this is better than use only one of them.
IF you are lazy grover, you water not often, have only Vermiculite then.
If you are overwater guy have only perlite
if you have total controll, have both , make right layers also
this can be important if you want professional grow
Mostly you need only perlite , this works good that medium V2 in most cases.
V1 vermiculite is a dream in veg and bottom layers in big pots. They hold water , and give it away precise.
Perlite is best for make dirt lighter, and more airy
These have total different uses
Sorry i go oftopic alot
I feel anyway this can be important to most growers know
I hear where you are coming from but, there are better suited components out there to do the job. Pumice is an excellent substitute as well as Turface MVP. Theu both hold 30-40 times their weight in water without degrading which vermiculite has a tendency to do, reducing the amount of aeration in the soil.Me self avoid vermiculite because i am overwatering guy
i like water lots
There is lazy grovers also, vermiculite is awsome then.
I self use only Vermiculite outside to watertasty plants like asian Lilys.
This saves me from watering them everyday.
Indoors i use only perlite.
Anyway, both can be good use if you are lazy underwatering grover.
We are different.
If you like water and take best care maybe avoid Vermiculite then,. This can save the lazy grovers
Vermiculite is dangerous use if you dont have total controll, because this material block air, and maybe can make rootproblems, specially if you water often
Lazy water growers have some Vermiculite also
Growers who loves water :
You like take care and water always when its neccessary avoid vermiculite then offcourse.
You need lots of air then also, Perlite is your best friend if you like water alot.
Anyway if you are super professional and do huge pots, both can be good have.
iF the envoirment is hot, you love have Vermiculite also.
If it runs normal have only perlite if you not super professional
Mostly Vermiculite do more bad than good, specially beginners.
Anyway this can be inportant to grovers that hate watering
We are different.
Thats why there is different stuff.
Important handle what you can and will do is important.
Hope this helps
GOOD LUCK ALL
