I think I remember reading that they are louder and not as poswerful as a vortex. You could get a 6" 449cfm vortex for $180. Just a thought. :smoker:

how are dayton fans compared to the vortex? i was looking at getting a dayton 465 to cool my future cab that will have a 400watt hps in it.

any links to vortex fans?? i am having trouble finding them.

I am currently using the fantech FKD12 inline 12" blower. It sounds like a jet engine starting up. I can just barely hear a hum in other parts of my house. I think the smaller fans would be pretty quiet when hooked up to ducting and all that jazz.

can someone explain what makes the vortex worth almost $100 more than the dayton?

There's almost no motor noise from the Vortex, it actually handles resistance with ease and it uses about 1/5th the power of a dayton. Oh, did I forget the Vortex fans have a 10 yr warrantee? The dayton will work fine if noise is not an issue and you don't plan on running a scrubber....they are known for creating harmonic vibrations that can travel throughout a home as well...

Check out www.mdhydro.com for some great prices on Vortex fans...

thought i would post this question in here...

i was looking at using a Can 50 air filter to go along with my vortex fan. my question is about the actual filter itself.

does it matter whether my fan sucks air though or blows air through the filter? i have been looking and cant find an answer for it.

i just found this setup and it would probably work well for me.

i could just buy the combo with the fan and filter and save more money. i assume that the vortex 600 would be sufficent to keep a cab with a 400watt hps cool.

It's slightly more efficient sucking, but it'll work fine either way. Do yourself a favor and get a roll of 3M 322 tape (foil backed tape for ducts) while your shopping for parts. It's great for sealing ducting and can handle the heat from lights with ease. Good call on the Can50/Vortex combo...you'll be glad you got em instead of saving a few bucks for lesser quality stuff.

Hey lovelies!

thanks for all the great insight, ill definately be checking out the vortex fans instead. . .

if anyone is interested in cheap fans and ducting supplies

http://rewci.com/fainvefaac.html : it for the fantech line of fans, but they are CMEMORY!

Anyhow, if i get a vortex i wont have a problem with a home made carbon scrubber<>>? And how much of a loss do u receive when u make one urself. . . Especially when u need to refll it urself, i thought u needed to vibrate those suckers at a high speed. . .

anyhow, thanks for the help

lots of love

If the homemade scrubber is made correctly, it will work fine. There's no way to calculate the resistance of a "homemade scrubber" without the details of how it's made, the surface area and the amount of carbon in it.

BTW, those prices for fantechs are higher than mdhydro's prices for vortex fans...and the fantechs aren't rated as high cfm wise.

I've had a Fantec 250 for 3 years now and have zero complaints, the only noise is from air flowing thru my cab not the motor. Your going to have air flow noise with any fan so just beware, just my 2 cents......

I got a fantech 6xl unit that has been running since Oct 24/7 with no problems. All fans will produce noise from the air moving. With insulation and proper duct work you can eliminate most noise. The dayton type blowers will indeed create a resonating vibration that will carry through walls and create rattles. If sound isn't an issue along with low duct pressure then teh dayton type blower would work just fine.
Good luck.
