Hello, just order a router control sold by Harbor freight for $15.00
Sears has them also but the want around 25.00
Will work w/o problems.

You should be able to stick on ohm meter on the output of the controller and as you change the position of the fan speed controller it should change the value of the resistance you are measuring with the ohm meter. This should give you an idea if the controller still works

is the router control needed in addition to the speed controller? or as a cheap alternative?

not sure where i can get an ohms meter from (or afford it lol)

i tried the fan i had wired in already, it seemed to work fine, big redution in noise/speed , though there is a faint, perhaps 'humming' sound that appears when i turn the speed down

One way is if you know a breaker controls an incandescent light from a wallswitch, kill the breaker remove the switch and replace with control,it should dim/brighten the lamp
