got a wool sweater around or anything made out of wool?

this is going to be terribly badly explained. but it turns out wool is good at getting woosh out of fans. (blower inline thingy.)

the output of the fan was bugging me, all that wooshing.

so i took one of those things you connect a dryer to the wall with (whatever you call it.) oh name´s escaping me, its basically a huge hose to direct airflow, i used 1 meter of it. lets call it a "hose". (if the proper name wasnt slipping me id call it that. :))

connected that, the "hose" to the outtake of the fan and then directed the end of the "hose" into a box a bit bigger than the "hose" (annoying me not remembering the name :))

but before i had draped the box with a thick wool sweater, lined the inside of it.

the "hose" and box go down behind the growcabinet, so any hot air that goes into the box, rises up. (and additional sound management by the whole thing being behind the cabinet.)

then i draped the arms of the sweater over the "hose" in the box so the end "hose" (lol) was totally covered and in the box.

well, i hope i have explained it clear enough, but this has dropped the considerable noiselevel of my 350 cfm fan down to barely louder than the computer.

and the temps have stayed the same, despite this setup.

nice....

and the word is duct or ducting (or 'flexible ducting' or 'dryer hose') :biglaugh:

This 'forgetting that important word' thing happens to me too often. Usually I remember it 2 minutes after the fact and kick myself for sounding stupid.

i got rid of all wool when i moved to so cal except for one trench coat liner. i just bought silencers instead. they are really simple and would be easy to diy.glad you found your solution,. send me a wool sweater LOL wool is amazing for outdoor wear it retains your body heat even when wet.

lol, ah, ducting, thanks FirstTracks, though im quite too stoned to have even remembered this thread till suddenly now when it popped into my mind to check :) (so it didnt even pop in later lol.)

yeah, got no cash so i went the diy way, luckily i had this old too small , garishly green woolen sweater around. lol, and the box that the fan came in.

can understand getting rid of wool in cali. :) wool is neat though in cold weather yeah, though personally i prefer some layer of cotton between the wool and me, itches like a mofo, wool. though some dont seem to feel it.

thanks supes, yeah, my ears are sure glad i thought of this. :) (and my very modest skills at diy(fitting a silencer into my cabin..) and wallet are glad too(buying one :))

i suppose anyone could use some other material than wool, it just does the job so well.

i think im gonna keep the original wording for humorous effect, plus im lazy.

besides, if people think this is neat enough to repeat, someone really nice and not so lazy will come along and make a tutorial with pictures lol. :)

oh yeah:) the ducting was just the plain old white thin plastic around some metal rings type.

bit too small but i doctored it.

probably could get it quieter with something more expensive, but im 2 meters away from the fan and i can hear my computer as well as my fan. (the computer is a little bit closer to me.)

and this is a fan my brothers were rather worried about the noise from when they helped me install it and sometimes i turned off the fan for a few hours to give my ears a break lol.

(the fan is rather noiseless, its the woosh.)

now its a soft woosh, sounds like a rather quiet ac.
