fan muffling

I have a superb top of the line extractor fan, highly reliable. It is, however, a little loud for my liking. What are some methods I can use to muffle the sound a little bit? All help is appreciated of course.

Peace,

I am going to purchase a fan controller, and turn it down to about half juice. That is an effective way to cut the sound down. From my PC experience, the fan is most efficient at about half speed anyway, meaning you get more CFM for watts used.

Also the HTG guy told me there was a "Fan muffler" but I have not looked for one yet.

Wrap fan with insulation as well as the ducting. Then get or make yourself a duct muffler.
Be carefull with fan controllers as some fans will not like them at all, and some fan motors will make more noise with them installed and turned down.
Not sure how turning down a fan will make it more efficient. If that was the case then why not get a an extcrator fan that has less cfm??? Worth a shot I suppose and I will give it a try.

build a box, fill with insulation, place fan inside, suspend box from ceiling via bungee cords. Also use the fan controller.

What sneakyninja said, but I would do some checking first before you hook up dimmer or controller to the blower.

If its a nice one, you dont want to stress the motor out, and if its not designed with that in mind, it may decrease your effectiveness and life of your blower.

The box is the best way to go, you can custom make it to your exact needs.

Even if you cant use a speed controller, though in a box you dont need one for noise, and even if you dont have a spot to hang it with bungee, still build a box.

I can post a few examples if you want, Ive got a few in mind.

I've got teflon lined ducting to reduce drag. There's also insulated ducting that's supposed to be better.

dude, mine vibrated a lot because i bracketed it to a truss in the attic...

so I hung it w/ bungees the other day and it is silent!
