I've decided I'll be going with the Max Can Fan 14" run in two stages, 100% and 40% reduction with a Can trol Speed Controller. My question is, would building a "box" around the Max Fan help reduce any extra noise on top of the fact that I'll be running a Duct muffler as well?

A box should help some, the duct muffler should help some, insulated duct should help some. You're going to have to throw lots at it to tame the sound I would think. (never ran a fan that large before though).

the 14" Max Can fan is actually one of there quietest fans. I think the only fan they make that is quieter is there 6", maybe even the 8" fan.

10" and 12" fans are much louder as they spin at double the rpm....

if you go ahead use dense materials for your construction to avoid sympathetic resonance ... where another thing closeby will vibrate and make a noise even when the fan is inaudible ...

A box would help, but i would guess the difference wouldn't be that big. But as Sat X RB said, use heavy board to build the box, and have insulation(soft, like glass fiber...) on the inside and make sure the fan is not vibrating the box. Have it hanging inside with "bungee cord" or something.

Duct mufflers work wonders for me! I absolutely love them. If I had the money I would only use them instead of normal ducting :)

Are you gonna post a growshow by any chance?

And sorry for my bad English...
