Fabric Pots … not made in China

Hi all

I would prefer to use Fabric Pots where the plastic that is used in the manufacturing process comes from the USA, Canada, Australia, NZ or Europe.

At the moment, I have only found two brands that are not made in China and was wondering if anyone might know of others. I have contacted the Fabric Pot companies directly and have so far found the following info:
Smart Pot: USA
Root Pots (Aurora Innovations): China
Geopot: China
Grassroots: USA
Root Pouch: China

Any other suggestions would be great ...

Some companies deliberately avoid answering the question of where their fabric is made and some say that they don't have access to the information. Pots that fit in this category include:
Gorilla Pots
Viagrow

Making your own is the best option ... if you have sewing skills and a sewing machine.:) I think I have been banned from dangerous machinery ... lol.

Removing all plastic is admirable and would be a huge task. After watching Plastic Planet ... I can definitely see the worth. Wool or burlap could be some alternatives for the geotextile plastic fabric used in the pots ... both have advantageous and disadvantages.

For my situation the holy grail is a fabric square 10gal pot over 12inches in height that is made in Canada. Might take a bit of searching.

At the moment it looks like smart pots or possibly root trapper II pots.

On the side comment of making your own pots, ive been making my own for years now, allows me to get them in the size i want to fit my space, and they work awesome for the bottom feed setup i use.

That and you can gain some handy sewing skills, if you dont already have them, but really it all boils down to how many you need and what size. and old basic sewing machines are a dime a dozen and will work forever with maintenance

It would be nice to have them in the exact size needed. Unfortunately, just not an option for me at the moment … but that doesn't mean its off the cards in the future. I have a couple of designs in mind too.:)

Just wondering how you've set up your bottom feed setup … aeration in the bottom of the pot or in the saucer/tray?

don't have access to the info???... where do they get the material??... does it fall from the sky??

I would never grow anything in a pot/bag made in china... let them keep their shit and poison their own people...

This is the best I've seen and he did all the math for finished pot sizes. I would use the low VOC adhesive he has listed later in the thread. Don't waste all the labor on things like burlap, wool, and any other material that will rot in no time. Good luck. -granger

Great post. He really put in the groundwork on that one … like the option to sew as well … nice one.

They pretty much are telling more about where the fabric comes from and what they think about it … by these answers :)

Just wondering how you've set up your bottom feed setup … aeration in the bottom of the pot or in the saucer/tray?

I use a tray and its a no waste system, so what goes in the tray stays, but im in no way saying that's the way to do it as what works for me doesn't for others.

Current setup is a tall walled tray with a gravity fed reservoir, no aeration, and it runs off an Arduino with homemade soil-sensor, which checks once an hr and whenever the sensor goes past set-point it dumps straight into the tray for a set period of time.

All i do now is fill the reservoir, maybe change the set-point, and check the soil sensor readings after i move whatever pot i have the soil-senor in, just to make sure it has good soil contact, and not giving off false readings.

That sounds like a sorted setup Mr Sparkle.:)

Thanks heaps for sharing the details. It might be a bit above my pay level, but I can see the beauty in it.

lol … after doing a few grows, I really wish I did an electrical ticket … so practical and many handy skills.
