Extending growing season.

Depends where you are located. Where I am 38 lat it allows me to start mid Feb. It doesn't get cold here until the end of Nov and little or no rain so it doesn't do much on that end for me but if you are in an area where you get rains in the fall then it will help reduce any mold problems.

As long as your nights are frostless then yeah end of Oct is doeable. You can also place a couple of 5 gallon water bottles in a greenhouse to passively keep them warm the water heats up during the day from the sun and because water cools down slowly they will keep it warmer inside during the night.

Bets thing would be to get some form of heating gas or electric , water isn't such a good idea because it also makes the humidity of the air higher which isn't favorable in relation to budrot

Cant afford that though, not currently anyways, otherwise Id get a fully equipped commercial style greenhouse put up, but the one Id like is around I wanna think $10,000 or so.

You can't really use a heater in a portable GH they usually are too small and being plastic not the safest of things. I know in the UK that have these great heat tubes but we can't get them here in the states. With the water I forgot to mention that you use sealed containers so they don't raise the humidity. Also if you get frost forecasted (unlikely I know in TX) and bringing them inside somewhere isn't doeable then you can place a fan in there which also helps.

Well then i would go would the sealed water containers and ineed fans , the more air circulation the better , good luck

find a pelonis disk furnace yeah i'm spouting a name brand those are the ceramic disk heaters

the pelonis i'm using in my 4x6 x 61/2 ft greenhouse i've had since i borrowed it from a buddy back in 1993 and it has a thermostatic heat control that does work it will
get the thing nice and toasty and you can put it on a timer so its not running during the day

by the way i'm near the us /cannada border east of the great lakes but i need a boat forthe shortest route to canada

i don't expect to be able to put out small plants there from dec til mid feb but the biggers ones in pots and the lettuces should be fine and i can always start seeds inside and get them out by march 1

what does a boat being the quickest route to Canada have to do with greenhouses?

It would depend on the thickness of the plastic i suppose? The problem is the frost and photoperiod right? Can you get indoor quality with a greenhouse? You can veg in winter with supplemental lights right?

terminalc, Oh yes you can grow some great plants in a greenhouse. In an area where you get real winters you'd need a good quality gh rather then the cheaper portable one. It also depends on the strain you are growing some like swiss miss and holland's hope are both made to be more cold resistent.

This is the money you could be saving if you grow

In a discussion with a dude while on vacation, a greenhouse came up in our ranting. It was agreed that greenhouses would allow an earlier start time say early March rather than a later finish say November.

Hmm i would say exactly the opposite or both.

The sun isn't strong enouygh here in march. So 20 april is an ideal sarting tim(also in relaation to the photoperiod)

But a GH certainly allows you to prolong the season by one or 2 months.

If you use the proper ratio of solar collectors to air space, its easy enough to maintain nighttime temps through october at least were i am. it may seem desirable to in this case make a smaller space so the ratio is lower but smaller spaces are harder to keep consistent and temperature stratification becomes an issue. the larger the space the more consistent the temp, hum, etc.
