Expired Water? How?

I found some Y2K stuff and the gallon jugs of water were expired in 2006. I don't see how bottled water goes bad. It's water.

What do you think? Should I use it. I don't have RO yet and I'm tight on the budget.

Purified water has no chlorine in it to kill any water loving nasties.
If left unsealed, purified water can indeed go "bad".

Depending on the amount of water you're talking about, water purification tablets are relatively cheap. The main ingredient in the tabs are chlorine so you'd have to let the water set awhile after application.Try and stay away from any tablets with iodine as an ingredient I'm not sure if that evaporates like chlorine.

Water does not go bad...
ALL products in the USA have to be stamped with a sell by or shelve life date.. No more then 8 years I think.

That h2o is fine to use. :joint:

purified water is just that purified... theres not living organisms in it.. so if the bottle and the water are sterile when it is produced, there is no way for organisms to get in the bottle. maybe if it was like 30 years old i would think 2wice about it.. the only other thing of concern was that if the water was sitting in the sunlight that some of the carcinogens from the plastic could leach out into the water.. but again it would take along time. thats the main reason i try not to drink liqour that comes in plastic.. the alchohol would surly pull some shit out of the plastic over time. it doesnt sound like your going to drink it anyways.. im sure the plants will be just fine with it.

good luck

Even simple condensation can make bottled water go bad, besides from the possible degradation of plastic. Not good to drink if you ask me, but the plants shouldn't notice. Why not try it on a test plant before using it?

Peace

Edit: you could also boil the water before using it...

Whether exposed to sunlight or any light at all water will grow mold (clear slime at first so you don't notice it), the water in that 7+ yr old container is probably bad. DO NOT USE IT IMO.

thanks for the responses.

it was boxed up in the basement and i smelled/tasted it first. then i fed my plants with it. it should be better than the tap water it's been given lately. still have a few gallons left.

i tested my tap water to have a ph of 6.6ph, alkaline - 80 ppm, clorine - 0.8 ppm, hardness - soft to ideal. iron - .2ppm, copper - .3ppm, nitrate - 1ppm, nitrite 0.20ppm. this is from a 10 dollar home depot water test kit.

and from the water company.....

fluoride .951-.959 ppm
nitrate .161-.172 ppm
trihalomethanes (tthm) 9.6-35.1 ppb (billion)
haloacetic acids (haa5) 4.9-16.5 ppb
chlorine residual .44-.78 ppm
turbidity(cloudiness of water) .26NTU
sodium 4.51 ppm

i really want reverse osmosis but i really need a dehumidifier(80% 2nd week of flower). is my water bad? one or the other what should i get? i'm leaning to a dehumidifier. maybe i should get a better hydrometer first. mine is a 8 buck cigar shop piece of s###.

If there are no organisms in the water at the time of packaging (because it is sterile)...then my guess is there is not going to be a "Big Bang" in the bottle--
It should be fine-- I have sparklets bottles behind my shed that are old as ****...altho I wouldn't drink it...just in case..lol-- I would dump it on my plants...if the hose wasn't so much more convenient--

Try telling someone who has been lost in the desert for a week with no water that it is past its expiration date and you shouldnt drink it. See what happens!

I have a thing in my fridge for cold water here. Sometimes that slime can be found in it. When it is empty i check the bottom, is it slimy, than throw away the drink i made. wash it out. I have had my share of slime though when i didn't notice. I live yet.

But about plastic leeching into water, that happens. There are those who believe that we ingest a lot of plastic these days and that these particles cause all kinds of disease and one suspect is obesity. Only 5% of all plastic is being recycled in the world. The rest stays in the environment, grinded down to plastic particles we eat, breathe in.

I have a bucket under my dripping fawcet. I use that water to water my plant. It sits there for days and weeks. There is something growing in there that is slimy and white indeed. My plants don't seem to dislike it. The normal plants I mean hehehe. I don't think the 'other' plants would mind it.

A few bacteria in the soil is usually good.

These are weeds, I have been growing for 8 years, I have used well water, rain water, tap water, every type of water you can think of except bought water, never bout one liter of water and still got great weed
I had grown somewhere there was no water, we had to fill big 40 gallon containers to have water for a few weeks, after some days there will be all sort of stuff in those containers, but the plants do not mind
So I would use it
