Exhausting into attic?

I am setting up a 4x8 in a bedroom where I already run a 4x4 so I can begin a perpetual setup. I am thinking of how to exhaust the air from the room. I cannot go putting holes anywhere so my only thought was to use the existing hole for the light fixture in the center of the room and just have a fan to extract through that hole. It would basically be a bathroom vent fan with enough capacity to exhaust the room at least once every 5 minutes. Does anyone have any experience doing something like this. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Depends on the climate , and how cold winter gets locally.

Condensation can do serious damage to roof timbers in older properties that lack modern preservatives , dripping from metal parts can stain or bring down plaster cielings , whatever water the plants use ends up in the attic , which was not designed to cope and may not be sufficiently vented.

Even a 4 inch fan could allow the spread of fire into the roofspace , and invalidate insurance , check building regs/code and box in with fireproof material.

Used a bathroom fan setup like this for a couple of years , several makes all failed within six months on 12/12 , a quality inline that replaced it is still working fine after ten years on 12/12 , and is more useable for attaching pipes.

Nickel,
Here's an option. Get a used junker window unit AC. Take out only enouch guts to get air flow. Put it in a window. Cut a 4 or 6" hole for a duct pipe coming from a carbon filter. Looks normal. Good luck. -granger

if you are in a non med state that gets cold you might have people wondering why snow never sticks to your roof. cops are assholes but they are not complete morons

the damage from the condensation has already been mentioned

I used to vent in to an attic that has a whole house fan exhausting in to it. I say 'used' to, because in the summer other unit's whole house fans are also exhausting up here, causing my exhaust fan to struggle against the back pressure. It works fine in the cooler months, plenty of ventilation up there and no one else running their fans causing pressure.

Climate is incredibly dry and I can never get my RH above 25% in the tent, so I've never worried about it getting nasty and damp up there.

That might work for a lot of people, especially if they're not on the ground floor. Great suggestion, Granger!

One thing to check for is what kind of venting your attic has. If there's nowhere for the air to escape once it gets there, you will have problems. A separate attic fan (with equal or more cfms than your grow exhaust) venting air out the roof is a good idea.

What Foomar said..

be careful or you can cause serious damage with mold, etc. Even if your tent is not reaching high RH levels.. you still may be pumping very humid air into your attic space during your night cycle.

Humid air during your dark cycle and condensation due to hot air hitting cold wood during the light cycle can lead to mold/rotting, etc very quickly.

I've done it successfully for years, but be sure to run dehumidifiers and be certain that the air has a way to escape from the attic.. either via another fan or large open soffets to the outside world.

and even so.. be sure to climb up there often to inspect that no damage is being done.

Scares me to think of the amount of damage growers do to their property or others due to their ignorance in the matter.

I use to exhaust in the attic, But I was always worried about MOLD. LOL. Now I vent into the garage. And leave the side door to my garage open. I borded up my closet in my room and cut a hole for my AC to fit in there. Inside the closet I have an intake and exhaust for my AC. So I exhaust all the hot ac exhaust up in the attic.
