Excuse for Contractor

What excuse can I give a contractor for wanting an outlet inside a closet (and a foot above the ground to boot)? It's too small to claim I want to make it a dark room. I can't think of anything plausible.

Tell them you are considering a small darkroom for your passion in life..photography, and want to keep your options open...lol no really

Tell them you might actually put your computer in there to free up the room ion the house when not in use.(my grandparents do this, go figure) Works great.

Tell them that it is your safe room and you want to be able to plug in a radio, cell phone battery or light just in case of emergency.

Of course my personal favorite, BECAUSE I SAID SO BIATCH!!! who cares, you can never have enough outlets, just tell him that and act a little crazy, you can never have enough outlets man said like Rhenfield.

Now when you get him to wire in the vortec fan and charcoal filters in the attic you might have a little more explaining to do.hehe

Do it yourself is the best bet if you are worried

Just tell him what you want, pay him and no questions should be asked.

Most electricians could give a shit as long as there getting paid. Why would an employee to a company rat on an odd outlet in a closet to the boss? Not likely.

should try and have him run a new dedicated line, i wouldnt pay some one to piggy back off another plug, ill climb in the attic and splice some romex in and fish it down the wall if thats all i wanted.

Grow a nut, do a little research, and fuk tha electrician. How much again do they get to run a wire? :fsu:

It came to me like a dream

It came to me like a dream

I'm going to say it's a media closet for our router, cable modem, etc. Just thought I'd post it in case anyone needed the idea.

P.S. I don't think I can "grow a nut" being a female and all. I'll concentrate real hard, though. Maybe that will work. Hope I don't go hermie!

As for the amature electricians who suggested I do it myself - I want a pro to do it to be sure there are no fire hazards. I tell no one so fire (and right in the grow closet no less) is the worst fear.

they don't care why you want it, so don't worry.

just clean the space out first. don't take this as an insult, but vacuum it out and spray some air freshener. all those 'little bits' on the floor can really spell it out for the guy...

you don't have to tell him "why", just "where"!

here's some green goddess for you..

peace.

It would be a lot more plausable if the area was already setup as a work area and you were running a six outlet strip into the closet. At that point who would think twice? Especially when you have to move it before they can work on it.

I agrre with Greengoddess. Tell him that you are planning on putting all of your stereo equiptment and routers in there. I do it all of the time for my clients. Not uncommon at all . if you are going to do it why not put 2 or 3 plugs in there?

yeah...if hes doing it and ur getting the work done anyway....u may has well get him to run you a new line in so you know 100% for certain that the only things on that circuit is whats in the closet.......... u got the righ idea though...a place for all ur cable connections and broadnand and stuff is a perfectly plausible reason....

agreed, Quite plausible and innocent appearing.

BASIC PRINCIPLES OF GOOD WIRING (fyi)
Electricity can be an intimidating concept for many because of the potential danger.
You can virtually eliminate that danger with a little knowledge and proper safety practices.
However, regardless of how much knowledge you have, never become lax in dealing with an electrical system, or it can be potentially deadly.

I agree also.
To figure out how much power you have available to the server (grow room) room, go to your circuit breaker and find out what size breaker(s) your server room (grow room) is hooked up to (e.g. 20A). Using the formula P=IV (power = current x voltage) you can figure out the maximum load you can put in the server room (grow room) circuit. For example, if you have a 20A breaker, the maximum load you can put on the circuit is 20A x 110V = 2200W.

To find out how much power you are currently utilizing, you will have to know if you either have a dedicated (your circuit breaker is connected to only the outlets in the server room (grow room) or shared circuit (your circuit breaker is connected to outlets in the server room (grow room) and other rooms.

If you are competent with electrical circuits, you could also place an ammeter between the breaker and the server room (grow room) circuit. Turn on all the devices in the circuit and read how much current is being drawn. Use P=IV to calculate the power draw. Again, DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS UNLESS YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH AC CIRCUITS as you could seriously hurt yourself.

Hope this helps
Peace
