this is a split system with the compressor in a sound deadening box. the manufacturer claims is silent! its $4000 canadian.
anyone use one of these?

dual hose portables are out of the question. window units are loud, and need a window.

If I was going to buy a unit like this (1. it be larger), I would go with this particular one. Mind you, if someone is close to the compressor, they'll hear it, but they'd have to be in you yard (back would be the right yard to put it in) and then its not a big deal, just say it provides heat to the house as well (many minisplit systems do).

The compressor ISN'T the noisy aspect of the outside unit. It's the damn FAN ! ! They say nothing about any air noise reduction.
Dual hose portables are useless.
They make 24kbtu window shakers and with proper isolation of a window unit can be made into a badass portable.
Mitsubishi Mr. Slim and comparable mini-split systems are really the Cadillac of small room a/c units. They are damn quiet too and don't need professional installation.

I've heard they are awesome and also very expensive.

For four grand, i really do think you should see if you can do better, man. That's a lot of cash for just two tons of cooling. I mean.... isn't it?

Not necessarily. It's 4000 Canadian so like 2200$ us. I can't get the specs to load so i can't see the seer rating(if it even has one) If it is a 13 seer equivalent (variable speed indoor fan, computer boards, larger coils etc) the price really isn't that far off. If it is 12 seer of lower, its a bit pricey. Mini split prices aren't that far off.....they aren't made of gold. Anyways, shop around. Learn about compressor brands as some have a much better track record than others. Thats where your money is going.

$4000 Can = $2200 US ???
Better check the exchange rate again. As of today $4000 Can = $3,759.36 US.

LOL....shoulda checked that. I usually don't post without doin a little research and i guess my exchange rate is a bit outdated. With that new bit of info, FUCK THAT ! ! You can definitely get a mini split for four grand.

People in town run the Excel air system and really like it. That being said, it is not very efficient and more money than other systems. There is no reason to go with the 2 ton unit as it is expensive compared to a big window shaker. The 5 ton unit they sell is not much more money and is what the people around here run in big rooms. I hear this is just a modified Carrier(brand) system.

The hydro store guy was just joking around with me yesterday on the energy efficiency rating sticker on the Excel Air units. He said instead of a star there was a frowny face.

bghydro.com sells them with free shipping. The price you have listed above is the price for the unsilenced version. for the 2 ton stealth it is 4800 US. 5 ton stealth is only 1200 bucks more.

I use the excel brand stealth model 36,000btu unit.. I love it and its great at its job of keeping things cool and in check. IT isn't as efficient as advertised but, I am comfortably able to cool 6 fixtures in a very hot and humid area of the usa all summer long without any problems.. Power bill shoots up about 75-100 bucks depending on how cool you like to keep it but, it was definately money well spent and way better than having a big ass window banger in the window of a large sealed flowering room.

OK!!!
so the stealth unit, w/ the compressor in a sound deadening box, which cant be heard outside for sure, actually costs $5535 CAD :bashhead: plus another $150 for a fan contoller that has a low setting when the temp is 100f or lower.
:fsu:
so screw that, i'm not sure i can justify it. here are the specs pdf
i'm not sure what the seer is but i think i heard 13 from a retailer. and it runs at 12 amps, high! i also dont understand how it can be silent with a 1850 CFM fan
so now im looking at this:

24k btu "slider" like a window but for hole in wall too. but ill have to run it inside, in a small room with a big window

or perhaps a mini splt, i shall look at johnny rotten's links.
i wanna know about the decible levels of the compressor/condenser

I purchased one earlier this year. A 5 ton running 2 rooms with damper package. This has been one of the hot tests summers in years. And my rooms never got to temp they say I should be at. They claim a room with 13k and a burner should be able to maintain any temp. Well I have never been below 83. Now I can get on room below 90. This is by no means a plug and play. You definitely should have someone who knows how to install ac units do it. Their claim of haven charged lines is bs. Find a friend who knows a guy who is cool enough to install an AC unit for you. 6 months later and I still need to call them weekly to trouble shoot. I regret buying this unit. It is far from perfect. Customer service is far from prompt when it comes to returning calls. Go with smaller traditional split units. Mitsubishi or Ideal or any other brand. When this unit goes down. And it has failed
On me many times the room gets to 118. To smaller splits in a large room is a much better solution.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND EXCEL. Buyer be ware!!!!

They rebrand generic builders grade hvac equipment. They are innovative in their triple split design but they use old school American ac tech. The Japanese / Asian minisplits are leaps and bounds ahead of USA. More efficient, variable speed compressors, great evaporator coil coatings, quiet, cheap, NO DUCTWORK!!. Ducts are a breeding ground for the nastiest stuff. Duct cleaning is a joke. Dirt stays in ducts forever. I would seriously scrub the hell out of air before it saw any duct work and use uvc inside the ducts maybe.

Minisplits are easier to clean and keep clean. Using multiple units and oversizing will allow for a unit to fail without the farm failing.

For stealth, place outdoor units in an area that could use heat. This area must have temp controlled ventilation. A room, a shed, a greenhouse.

What specific problems are you having with your unit? AC isn't rocket science and I think I would rather have a serviceable US built split that moves 2000 cfm than an imported mini split.

Excelsux1, you are so right about Excelair, cheap equipment with high price. You need any custom ductwork done, go to ECCO in Langley, they are awesome to deal with.
