What's new

Even though weed is more legal nowadays , it is really " less legal" for me.

Even though weed is more legal nowadays , it is really " less legal" for me.

Back in the late "70's" I would smoke about anywhere in public [except in the presence of a cop] or in a car and grow weed in my back yard with out any worry in the world about a bust or a search. Right now I'm not smoking because my great paying job has drug testing and not growing because everybody and there grandma knows what it looks like and a medical card doe not protect me from losing my job. If I was smoking, there wouldn't be an ashtray with roaches in my car like the "70's" either. Any one else feel like it is less legal now than in the old days even though laws are more lenient?

Funny how you stated it, but it's true!!! However, when we left stuff in car, out in the open, was it as potent as nowadays? Probably not.

No matter...it's still nice to smoke in the park even if illegal....you just have to be aware.

However, it brings back memories of what you wrote!!

Great observation EFR...
I dont remember ever hesitating to spark up in public and if at Disneyland finding a spot ta take a few tokes or my favorite way to FK with people in a crowd...
Packing empty cigarette tubes with the filter removed and packed as well...
Just keep moving and no one can figure it out...
I've had fun doing this a few times...haha..

Guess it's where you live... That and not having more than a 1\2 oz on me..lol

But...

It wasn't till the laws relaxed that I felt safe enough to grow anything...
Figured Id rather pay in money than years for my smoke...
Man!!! If only I had known!!! I would have been chugging and gotten somewhere by now...

For me it's all about penalty you pay if caught...
$175 fine (More legal) VS 2 years in jail(Less legal) VS No penalty (Freedom)....

Yeah... Id say it feels more legal in the sense of MORE and not totally...
Again...Dependent on where you live...

Can't talk abuot the 70s as I have not been smoking back then, but I can say also the 90s were more relaxed here in europe... I remember driving my VW stickered up camping van machine all across europe with a loaded bong behind the driver seat and 50grams of hash up in the camper shell.
authoritires as well as the public a re more aware nowadays.
That van alone would a secure bust today.
back then we were taking hits on the german autobahn in between the trucks on the right lane hahaha.
and bring "decorational dry flowers" back from switzerland... smoking blunts in clubs... you name it...
I feel especially with driving it's more uptight than ever. I mean the cops our age now will know what's up, not like the generation before them who couldn't tell parsley from orange bud or northern lights.
They'll make you do a urine or blood test so often now, that was not the case 20 years ago...
You won't get in much trouble for a little weed, but as soon as it's on the road or driving a vehicle is involved- you're toast. that sucks so much, who says you can't drive the next day after a nice smokey evening ? It's ridiculous! like having a beer at 8pm will disable you to drive properly the whole next day.
Disappointing, really....

I am an adult that lives in a non med state. Use good judgement and you shouldn't need to be paranoid. I smoke at bars, outside at the park and don't have a problem. Once you become 30yrs old, the chances of you getting busted for weed go down tremendously. Also, being a white male in the USA doesn't hurt. Be smart, enjoy the herb

I live in Southern Oregon and local cops - even with medical marijuana - are far more aggressive and jack-booted-thuggish than ANYTHING I encountered in California in the 70's ... 80's ... 90's ... or '00's.

I did a web-search for "Qwerkle" and this took me to a dispensary starting up in Ashland, a supposed 'liberal' area.

I called them up to ask about Subcool seeds, and ended up trying to ask questions about Oregon Medical Marijuana.

The paranoia I encountered far exceeded anything I encountered in Silicon Valley - or San Diego - in 30 years. They would only answer about half my questions. It was pretty obvious that they were really scared. I respect them for "fighting the good fight", but, Jesus.

I think a lot of LEO attitude toward Cannabis is dictated by local culture.

Law enforcement is one of the primary industries in Southern Oregon. For that to work, they need heads to bash.

The local papers are filled 2/3 of the time with stories about drug busts. I feel zero threat from Cannabis users and very little threat from meth-users. I even keep a pile of copper in my driveway to give them something easy to steal.

BUT - I do like the ability to go to a dispensary and obtain a variety of high-quality Cannabis.

I have smoked just about everywhere

I have smoked just about everywhere

About 25+ years ago on a Charter Flight to the National Ski Week in Vail, CO. With the Tri-Network Ski Club (ABC, NBC, CBS)

We were in the back half of the plane, one guy kept the stew busy and we just started blazing :dance013:

That's the only time in a jet :tiphat:

Or maybe we were just young, stupid & lucky back in the 70's.

Mere possession was a felony most places in this country, and distribution was completely underground, domestic production mostly second rate & scarce. "Medical" marijuana wasn't even a consideration 40 years ago.

Decriminalization advocates held some sway briefly during the Carter years, but they had no counter for the "Think of the Children!" song & dance. Both MMJ & retail answer those concerns the same way they're answered wrt alcohol, tobacco & prescription drugs. Those solutions were beyond the comprehension of the times. They simply hadn't been invented.

Drug testing hadn't been invented, either.

Yeah, it's the omnipresent drug testing that is the huge difference. If you smoke weed, and aren't willing to use the various methods that mask the THC in your urine, then it's pretty dangerous for many in certain jobs. If it wasn't for the drug tests, then you could easily grow for yourself in a small cabinet, and with vaporizers it's so much easier to consume weed in public places. Fuck the drug testing.
