WHITE ROCK, B.C. - A B.C. man probably wishes he had given his 11-month-old son a set of keys to play with instead of a phone, after the infant accidentally dialled 9-1-1 and brought police to dad's marijuana grow operation.

Mounties say a 9-1-1 call came in from a White Rock, B.C. residence Friday morning but whoever was on the other end of the line hung up. Officers arrived at the residence and after numerous knocks on the door went unanswered, they entered the home.

"The gentleman was quite surprised," said White Rock RCMP Const. Janelle Canning.

She said the 29-year-old male, startled by the sudden sight of police, insisted he hadn't made the call.

When it was suggested a child might have dialled, the father objected and said his son was far too young.

That's when police spotted the baby boy, phone in hand.

"We saw him playing with the cordless phone and just pressing all the buttons, so evidently he had called 9-1-1," Canning said.

With that mystery solved, officers began inspecting the residence and soon discovered a 500-plant marijuana grow operation.

The father was arrested and will appear in court in early April on charges of production of a controlled substance and mischief.

The boy was removed from the home by the Ministry of Children and Family Development, though he was later released into his mother's custody.

The mother does not live in the residence and Canning says she had no idea what was going on at the home.

one weird scenario. rule #1: don't let children play with the phone at your grow location. :fsu:

Where was the 911 call back? I remember my Mom's number for work being 921 as a child and making the 9-1-1 mistake more times than normal.

I also remember about a newspaper article in my hometown referring to a woman harassing 9-1-1 with over 1000 calls in a year.

1 Random 9-1-1 dial had police "frightened"? Hrmm I doubt it... unless regulations have changed with dispatchers I have a feeling this house was under some form of suspicion and the ability to get in warrantless was to good to miss out on.

just my .02 cents but the cops never came to my parents place when I was a kid miss-dialing.

Edit: forgot to mention my point: Cell phones in grow ops only - No home phones especially when you have kids. I got in an accident and called the cops on my cell in the rural area and they full out admitted they could not track me, had no idea where I was, and that I needed to walk a half mile to find a street intersection to tell them how to find me. 4 hours later they finally showed. this was 4 years ago now.

edit again: Had seen this in the paper and commented after seeing thread title here, but now that i've fully read it I can't believe they searched the house. THE COPS SAID they suspected the child dialed, and saw the child with phone in hand. NO MENTION OF SMELL OR SOUNDS RELATING WHATSOEVER TO DRUG DEALING and just up and decide to search the place.. what the hell is that?

Something smells really bad about this and it isn't fish.

Get your silver foil hat out.... The grow was being watched and under full investigation, and they told 911 dispatch that if a 911 hangup call came in, to let them know. Noo they didnt do that. They told all uniform officers on all shifts if they came across that house to do whatever they could to search.

Seriously, get a grip

The cops did exactly what you would expect. They had a hangup call and they responded. Thats what almost every police force would do. Maybe they tried calling back and the line was busy.

After no answer, and they had to force their way in, and finding a man and a baby, they searched to make sure nothing was going on. Mom could have been in the back with her brains on the floor. Had he answered the door with the kid, then maybe they would have left, probably not.

I am all for jumping on the cops when they fuckup and I can barely stand the fact that I have to deal with cops in my personal life in a non LE aspect (kids sports, school, etc). But in this situation, dad just fucked up and the cops did nothing wrong IMO

Way to put words in my mouth. You know there are these things called files? and that cops usually take your licenses and information and run them in databases to see whats written on your file.. Kind of how they catch people with warrants out.

I am not saying they were watching him, I am saying that he must have previously done something to get some kind of remark on his file and after the 911 call, and looking at who lives at this number and their files, that it might be prudent to take this bit of luck and run with it for a full search.

No hard feelings though :joint: just my :2cents:

well heres my personal story my wife and i are fighting. nonviolent. she starts having chest pains and feels faint. i grab the cordless phone and dial 911 which proceeds to die immediately. my wife starts feeling a little better so i dont call back thinking it didnt go through but the phone is dead so they cant get through calling back.. 5 mins later a police cruiser is here and a cop banging on my door. i answer the door with two plants behind a door two feet from the cop and a dozen under 2 400 watters up the stairs from them. the cop comes in a fire engine shows up paramedics the works the cops stayed in my living room (entry room) and did not take one step passed it. they were there for 15 mins and after my wife refused to be taken they left. we even told the cops we were fighting..

his biggest mistake not answering door... the cops will yell and bang on the door screaming about a 911 hangup before they bash your door in. im all for not answering your door but in a 911 hangup the cops must get info on what caused the hang up and will not leave until they do

also dont let kids play with phones come on!!!
