Hows it going guys? I was wanting to get some recommendations on some Electronic music. I really just now got into the scene and really digging it. I realize I am only into the very basic and introductory bands, so help me out!

Right now, I am really into:
-MGMT
-Cut Copy
-Passion Pit
-Some Ghostland Observatory(don't like the singers voice much)

I am also into stuff like STS9, but as I said, I enjoy the fun, and easy going lyrics and rhythm.

I really like the poppy and fun aspects of MGMT and Cut Copy.

What other bands should I check out?

Also, does anyone know what recording software some of these bands use? I read an article one time that said, but I am interested in playing around with some new software and kill some time.

If you haven't heard any of these bands you should check out these 2 videos...pretty cool stuff:

Passion Pit - Sleepyhead, a very cool video.

MGMT - Kids, MGMT adopted this as their official video. They had nothing to do with it originally.

Bevo there are tons of great music making soft ware it all depends on your style. There are lots of great software programs that do it all, or do a specific thing you are on the right track with fruity loops( you can use that to create patterns and such), fruity loops supports VST and VSTI so find yourself a shit load of free VST(effects) and VSTI(software synths and "machines" that you can open up in any program that supports vsti and use it in that program(most programs support VSTI and vst now).
There is a shit load of free VST and vsti check out the site Here(this site is the SHIT, lots of resources and links to free shit, there is shit worth paying for too), with some searching you will find lots of great resources, if you know how to torrent you can find a bunch of awesome cracked software. Software i can recommend to make beats : Fruity loops ( any version, the new ones 6.0 or better kick ass), Reason 2 ( i think they even have 3) , Native Instruments makes great shit from REAKTOR to some incredible VST and VSTI(the *battery sampler is amazing and industry standard just like the absynth) check out their web site for demos that you can play with in fruity loops, theyre spectral delay is incredible as well as their sampler an TRAKTOR software( MP3 DJ software that works seam-less) , they also got this new toy *maschine* groove production studio that links with your software on your PC "seamlessly" looks interesting as heckwww.nativeinstruments.com - Jake Mandell one of the most influencial techno and IDM producers ever is on the R&D team as well as Richard Devine(another amazing electronic music maker with the most incredible srudio ive ever seen. , Ableton 2.5 (amazing software that does it all, its like sound forge but better you can open up VST and VSTI in it , edit anything and everything and automate it all) LOTSA producers use ableton LIVE while they are performing and jam out with all the knobs and features!! Like i said Sound Forge is awesome, try to find an old version i rock 4.5 as my sampler to record and edit all of my sounds and samples, i have a HUGE list of VSTi drum machines and synths( peep KVR they will tell you whats hot and whats not), check out http://www.buzzmachines.com/getbuzz.php its a FREE tracker software with AWESOME machines and effects, works like reaktor where you have to build modules(very HARD software to understand but once you get it, you cant beat it, ROBOT music str8 up, reaktor is better in that regard), the cool thing about buzz software is that the machines and effects open up in fruity loops via VST, their synths and effects kick ass and they have SHIT loads you can download from the site, there is alot more software out there so much so that you probably will never need to buy ANY kind of h ardware at all( i dont own a single piece of hardware, i sold my midi controller i just use my mouse now)
Making beats with minimal amount of hardware is where its at, the only synth id buy right now is a Virus Access, Nord or a Roland and of course id get the "rack" version and get a midi keybrd. Hope this helps you , i havent been making "beatz" for a while but i plan on getting back into it soon, ive recently fixed my computer all i hafta do is start installing my old sound card ( 6 channel , terratec ) and get cracking installing software! Good luck
