Electricity: Installing a split unit do I need a subpanel?

I am installing a single split unit in a garage that will be sealed off. The main panel is within the garage the split unit is being installed in. Is it necessary to run a sub panel when there is plenty of free space on the main panel? I would much like to do this whole thing by my self but a sub panel would require em to hire an electrician.

No and no.

There is no need for a sub.

There is no need for an electrician to run a sub panel. Just a good book.

In my case I'm putting a sub panel in so when the power goes out I can have one genny for the house and one genny for the grow.

Absolutely no need to run a sub panel for a mini split in the same room as the main breaker, that just doesn't make any sense. There are a couple ways to do this, if your A/C is 110/120V(Samething) and calls for a 15AMP breaker, then, install a 15AMP breaker in your main panel and then run 14 gauge wire from that new 15AMP breaker to your socket for the A/C. Also, you can also run 220/240v but you will need to do more reading.
