Early Retirement

Hey everyone,

I'm kicking around the idea of retirement, and have been thinking about WHERE? While it's been some time since I've been there, I was thinking about Mexico. I remember the last time I was there, a guy could live quite comfortably on $10,000 a year or so, as the economic climate then was quite well. Not too sure how it is now, hence asking for advice from a more 'seaoned' traveller. Any suggestions or advice?

Muchas gracias mi amigos! :joint:

How about Brazil? I lived there for a few years. Very friendly and happy people, and a true melting pot of humanity. Once I was fluent in Portuguese and blended in, I was generally assumed to be a German immigrant ("fala alemao! Como e que 'ta?"). In Mexico or other countries close to the U.S., I'm assumed to be American. I would rather blend in. With its natural resources I think Brazil could be entering a period of increasing wealth.

Hey boroboro

How does the Brazilian govt take to Americans moving there? I take it portugese is the native language? I know Brazil is steeped in culture, and from what I've seen in pics, it's a temptation. Brazilian women are so very beautiful, that's for sure. If they [Brazilians] take kindly to Americans, It would definitely be a possibility. What's the legal climate as far as our sacred herb? I hear Brazilian jails and prisons are a nightmare. Also what is the finanical climate there like? Exchange rates? Basically I'm wondering how well the dollar does there. I sure appreiciate the help!

Thanks for the reply boroboro!

It'd be a bit more than 10K, but I'm looking at it conservatively.

Health is relatively good. While I do smoke cigs, I'm of avg weight, 175 lbs under 6' and in fair shape, no known med conditions other than migraines and a bit of arthritis. Nothing severe. I use cannabis for the migraines and insomnia as well as a bit of depression. I refuse to take any 'pharma' meds like zoloft, paxil, or prozac etc for 1 I don't believe in further enriching pharmas pockets and 2 I had a g/f on prozac and when her doc took her off she went WACKO.
I'm likely less than 2 years from retirement, and look forward to being active while enjoying more time to spend outdoors, hiking, camping, fishing... etc. I'm an avid gardener of all things, not just cannabis. But it IS one of my fav things to grow. That and I'm good at it :D I'm definitely not your typical 'old fart' that's for sure. Most of all my good friends are much younger than I, and I really enjoy being a 'mentor' type to them. I've talked to many of them about leaving the US for retirement, and although they tell me they'll miss me, they respect the idea that I'm looking to find a better place to spend my 'golden years'. A couple said they like to go too. lol I've no attachments and in all reality, I'm like a leaf on the wind. I go where the wind tells me. I've just yet never traveled outside the continental US. Although I DO look forward to it.
I'm a typical outdoorsman and could easily live in a tent or teepee, and have in the past. I enjoy hunting, but only for food, not sport. I believe in respecting Mother Nature and the more time I can be and spend time outdoors, the better. Had I been born 20 years earlier, I guess many would call me a tree hugger, as I'm not one that likes to follow the staus quo. I like to blaze my own trail. Typically I follow native american beliefs and lifestyle, and am very comfortable that way. More and more as I age, I find myself wanting to be as far from large developed cities as I can be. I enjoy peace and solitude and value it greatly.

Probably a little more than you wanted to know, but I had the time :D

Mexico - Costa Rica - Domin Repub - Those would be my first choices

Hell, i might even wander India for a while

The weather is good in those latin amercan and CA countries.
sounds like you need a good women too - They are cheap and they will love you forever there. Health care will be an issue in the future so it will be cheaper there also.

Look into Costa Rica first. You can get a nice little place by the ocean and live ok on 10k a year!

Much thanks for the reply Justa,... I've been doing a little investigating on many places, and it seems CostaRica would be a nice place, my only concern is growing for personal use and the laws that pertain to it. I sure don't need to end up in a jail in a foreign country.

BoroBoro suggested Brazil, and after looking there it's mighty nice. Just hard to find the legalities on cannabis and it's growing and use is these countries. I've yet to learn a foreign language, which I will wherever I go, otherwise I might check out the foreign forums here.

Again Thanks!

I have a Brazilain wife and have been there many times. I would never live there. Oh sure there are a lot of nice places but overall i think its one of the most corupt places on earth. Pluse they arent nice for any drug uses unless you have money to pay them off.....

If you must grow - go to India - Live in the country there - with 10k a year you will be a KING....you can grow all the time and get a wife that will treat you wonderful for the rest of your life. i know, it sounds crazy and some parts of india are nasty but once you get away from the cities its a beautiful place. Seriously!

We must be about the same age....I'm looking at retirement in just over 2 years...but I'm staying in the good ole' USA...
My plan is to move back to the midwest...southwest Michigan. Born and raised in Chicago, I spent a lot of time at the dunes, and at summer homes in the area. Absolute perfection, if you ask me. The ocean intimidates me, but being on or near a lake is bliss. I want to walk out my front door and right down my pier to my own little boat....fishing off my pier, or my own little piece of sandy beach. All four seasons, a bit milder than Chitown.
Funny how they've just voted in Medical Marijuana...haven't got it organized, haven't come up with absolutes, but for the amount I grow, I wouldn't be worried in the least. Thankfully, I've got plenty of time to work out the logistics....

Peace,
Jules

Check out south east Asia!

Thailand is a blast, and cheap too.. depending on a mans vices.

I know there are issues with obtaining visas. When I was there you had to leave the country ever two months and re-enter. Although I'm sure one could get a more permanent visa?

Other countries have different visa regulations. Vietnam was chaotic, at least the parts I've seen. Laos was very beautiful. The Philippines is a popular retirement spot. A very beautiful country, with gorgeous English speaking women, and reasonable too!

There is a cultural difference, although if one embraces it, I feel one could live like a king. Also doubt you could live anywhere for 10, 000 a year, not without a serious decrease in standards.

Maybe I'm wrong, haven't been to near the places I'd like to.
The only issue is money...
