DWC Root Rot

Guest

Hey everyone,

I just pulled out a male that showed early signs of sex in my recirculating DWC setup, and when I pulled out the male, there was some root rot. :badday:

The rot was In the hydroton clay pellets

however, The roots that were submerged in the water were perfectly fine.

Also, the roots that were affected did not smell whatsoever... everything just smelled like roots/sprouts to me.

Here is a photograph of their current status.

The one on the very left was the male which had the root rot.

The one on the very right seems to be drooping because it may have rootrot however the roots are fine that have poked out.

The smallest one most definitely has root rot because the roots only poked out one side of the net pots... plus it has been lagging behind the others the whole time.

Once again... ALL of the roots that are in the water solution are perfectly healthy looking.

Let me cover the basics

Rez Temp: 65-68*
pH: 5.6-5.8
PPM: 900-1000
2x dual socket airpumps (5 airstones)
40-50g of water in setup.
Seeds sprouted in Rockwool
Hydroton is the medium.
I added a few cups of beneficial fungi to the solution. (could this be what it was? it didn't smell bad... but the root growth looked dead underneath the goop)

Questions
1)
for a recirculating DWC setup, which water level is best to prevent root rot? (mine has fluctuated between all three because i've never been sure which is ideal)

2) should I add H202? if so how much? (should I soak the hydroton with h202?)

3) would SM-90 (or similar products) cure the problem?

4) would more beneficial fungi (dr hornby's pirahna) and/or beneficial bacteria help kill the pathogens?

5) Should I raise or lower the pH?

I found some information on using h202 in the system. I dont have it with me at the momment. I will post back with it later.

I used a system much like that. If you look in my gallery you will see my buckets. Water the plants, it runs down into the buckets below which all collect back into the main central bucket which contains the pump.

This dint work out too well for me. The maintenance was just hanious.

Im starting to wonder if root rot may be part of the rockwhol being too wet.

BTW, dont worry about high jacking. Id like to compile a list of info about root rot. I dont seem to find anything on the site about it, and its a common problem.

it sounds mor like foot rot FlamingMoe! as far as the water level goes, wen u put the mes baskets in the water level shud be touching the bottom of the pot and as the roots grow out u drop the level a bit at a time so the roots r in th water, u just keep dropping te level a bit so the roots follow it. in the end u hav a small depth of water in the bottom with the tap roots in it.

u then hav tons of bubbles that create a most atmosphere for the other roots.

if its root rot empty it all sterilise it and refil it. the roots can be rinsed with hp (at i think 3ml per litre but ceck that) use som good quality zym.

check if its foot rot

good luck

I have had root rot in my old DWC set up twice and each time it was cured using the H2O2 treatment, so i would highly recomend doing that but be careful as i hear it could be bad for the plants. If your using organic nutes with beneficial bacteria i think that the H2O2 will kill it.

H202 treatment works but isn't desireable if your using organics as it will KILL all the good organisms
If the roots are fine and only the part above ground is brown/orange don't worry about it-this is the area that was exposed to humid/oxyen free air
As for the droopy leaves in a DWC-this can be caused by an agent that I have forgetten the name-pythium?--SUBCULTURE has proven very effective-at least for me- in overpowering the viral agent-and attaching to the same root hairs-you will notice them perking again in a week or so since the subculture is colonizing the same hairs that the pythium(?) did and allowing effective O2 transfer again.
Lastly, make sure there aren't light leaks and high temps in the reservoir as these are the 2 chief reasons that problems occur in DWC's
Good luck bro!
