Boncarver did some outdoor in coco coir, my first outdoor grow was in a waterfarm, it does work, I had problems with insects though, apart from that, it's an incredible way to grow.

I dont think Ive ever seen outdoor DWC but it has been a theoretical topic of much discussion w/ friends.. and you hit the wall we thought we would hit: root rot. maybe next time incorporate a rez chiller? it looks like you just put white buckets outside?? you should at least light proof them for algae, which also helps with temps.. I have found taping 5mil panda plastic around lid and sides of buckets also helps with temps.

I was thinkimh, if i did it, maybe let them get a foot, trim lower growth and build a heat resistant platform of somekind over the buckets.. add in a rez chiller.. should be doable.. VERY interesting idea, after beating root rot the next concern imo is root space! indoors w/ 2 weeks veg Ive had them easily fill out the entire shape of the bucket.. can you imagine the size of an outdoor dwc girl, in proper conditions, put out in may as a clone, and harvested sometime in october? holy shit :yoinks:

very interesting thread though.. I think outdoor dwc has amazing potential

was talkin about this with my man eL artist and he had a really good idea: why not bury the buckets? this would achieve light proofing and heat proofing, no?

next season we may go ahead and do 6 girls outside in their own individual 18gal rubbermaids.

yea i just set the buckets outside hadnt really had much experience with the algae issue lol learned my lesson now though..but ive also had some tomatoes outside in a recirculating dwc they did really well once they got large enough to shade the roots but i was also thinking about lightproofing it by taking a black bucket and placing it inside of a white bucket to keep the heat down and the light out and i would do a rez chiller but im not sure where to find one?.. ive also tried putting the buckets in the ground but then you have the issue or draining the water unless you do a recirculating one? just some ideas thanks for the input

just google rez chiller, man. any hydro store will sell them

as far as burying the bucket, i dont understand what thr water draining is about? why would you need to drain? assuming it was to re-mix nutes, you could just pump them out, which is an incredibly simple ordeal. i think if temps are an issue, burying is the way to go, if its a colder area, i'd keep it above ground.
