DWC in Cab during Warm Weather??? How do you keep your res cool???

Like I was saying, other than using an expensive $250 plus chiller, how are you guys keeping your res's cool?? Mine only holds 3 Gallons and within hours of a cool flush it is back up to ambient temps in the cab of 80F......my rots are starting to rot and I know it will soon be game over for these mothas!!

Do some of you switch to soil in the warm months??? Soil just seems like a pain in the ass??? With DWC all you have to is top off your res periodically and it is easy to tell when it needs more.....with soil I feel it be more guesswork.

ANyone ever saved a rotting p by switching systems?? They're a month old so I was thinking I could possibly take clones??? But I'm such a super n00b that I know I will prolly mess that up as well.....

THanks for any help,
Peace and Love

freeze several two liter bottles and swapping out every few hours for a fresh one. It's annoying but w/o a water chiller you don't have much option. Also if you can.. you can put a fan blowing over the open rez. That will cool it down, but will also speed up your requirements for topping off and the RH... it's another option.

I was thinking, even in the winter I keep my place at about 71F so the cab temps would prolly be 76F.....meaning it will still be too hot for DWC. I guess I'm gonna have to become a soil guy

With a 3 gallon res, the ice probe may be just the thing for you. http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_viewitem.aspx?idproduct=CW1111&productid=CW1111&channelid=FROOG

Try moving your cabs "sunrise." I just switched from 3pm to 11pm. However my cab's in the garage where night temps are 20 degrees cooler than day temps.

Consider enlarging the tub. More water means slower temp swings.

Thanks for the reply FreezerBoy......I was thinking of getting an ICEProbe but I've read such horrible things that I don't know if I can spend a $100 on it.
With an IceProbe do you have to buy the additional temp control unit or it that just if u want to hav it shut off when temps are at a certain level???

What would happen if I got a chiller / decided to switch to soil and just trim all the roots off?? Would it be able to sustain that kind of damage??? I hear about people trimming roots in DWC's occassionally, but what about all the roots that arent in the net potting??

THanks for any input,
Cheers

Hook up 12v computer fans to blow onto water surface of dwc.

I've seen a few here that used 45 degree abs/pvc elbows - fan blows thru end above dwc lid, and really cools rez temps...

Good luck

I've never used one and have read conflicting reviews. I believe there's an optional $50 thermostat. Given that optimal water temps are 65-68 degrees, I don't know that the Probe is capable of being "too" cold. A cheaper thermostat may be a $15 timer. Run it 15 minutes per hour or, two hours a day or ...

Never trimmed roots but, seems people do it all the time. Just lay off the tap roots, the bigguns. Not insulting anyone's girls but, let's remember that we're talking weeds; The cockroach of the plant world.

Keep the mom in there and see what happens. If you screw up you will learn from the mistake. Be sure to take clones and put them in soil. That way you'll have backup plants to either flower out or keep as a new mother(s)

Do you pull air from oustide tha cab to do this? Other wise, i dont see how fans blowing air over water remove any heat? The water should already be cooler or equal to that of the cab air...
